Just in time to kick off the Summer, Captain Planet has teamed up with 2 long-time collaborators (Zuzuka Poderosa & Raphael Futura) for a new Brazilian disco funk song, "Moqueca.” The song harkens back to Brazil's legendary funk parties in the 70's and early 80's - where soundsystems bumped legends like Tim Maia, Sandra Da Sa & Gilberto Gil - while infusing some fresh contemporary energy and extra thump for today's dancefloors. Zuzuka's bright vocals bounce over a bubbly bassline, syncopated percussion and wormy vintage synthesizers, while an additional punch is brought in the form of horn arrangements by the prolific maestro Todd Simon, another frequent Captain Planet collaborator. 

“Moqueca” takes inspiration from the Brazilian dish of the same name, a nationally famous fish stew that varies across the regions of Brazil. In her lyrics, Zuzuka talks about the origins and variations of Moqueca, starting with the style from Espirito Santo, her home state, and continuing to Moqueca Baiana, from Bahia, which incorporates African influences and ingredients. The result is a song that is as much an homage to Brazilian music as it is its food, culture and people. 

The song is the first single from Captain Planet's upcoming "Sounds Like Home” EP, which finds the producer turning towards more retro, analogue and live band elements, all with an eye towards his signature “Gumbo Funk” of global sounds. “Moqueca” is out on Brooklyn’s Bastard Jazz Recordings May 27th.

Channel Tres grew up in the Compton neighborhood of Los Angeles. His voice is effortlessly deep, as if Barry White didn't realize he was Barry White. "Controller", Channel's debut single on Godmode (Yaeji, Shamir), took classic Detroit house and reimagined it with the surly attitude of West Coast rap. Pitchfork, NPR, Gorilla vs. Bear, BBC Radio 1, Spotify, Apple, and KCRW were early champions, along with Australia's esteemed Triple J radio, who put "Controller" in full rotation.

In advance of his self-titled debut EP (out July 27 on Godmode), Channel blesses us with "Jet Black", another taste of his unorthodox union of four-on-the-floor and Compton. The song is an oozy ode to the blackest of black, over a ferocious modular synth instrumental that takes cues from industrial and early electro. "I never reply when you hit me/ I'm off the grid you can't get me" – it's hard not to feel invincible when this one plays. The video, directed by cult filmmaker Anthony Sylvester, captures Compton at its most contorted, where barbershops double as churches, where liquor stores become after-hours raves.

Originally written and produced as the centrepiece to his 2014 FabricLive compilation, Erol Alkan’s ‘Sub Conscious' arrives on 12” vinyl and to streaming platforms for the first time, accompanied by two charismatic remixes from Manfredas.

Shimmering and undulating, the original cut of ‘Sub Conscious’ was designed with Fabric’s cavernous main room in mind, taking full advantage of any finely-tuned soundsystem with a patient, rhythmic trip. Remastered here, the track evolves out of hazy darkness towards halcyon euphoria in a uniquely Alkan style.

Resident at Opium Club in Vilnius, cult DJ and producer Manfredas provides two hugely creative and alternative takes on ‘Sub Conscious’. The first works hallucinatory magic with a supple bassline and much of Alkan’s original stretched and repurposed around vampish oscillations and a westward vocal sample.

On the contrary, the ‘Stream Of Consciousness' mix sees Manfredas pitch down and strum the bones of ‘Sub Conscious’, unexpectedly delivering a lovingly lethargic, bottom-heavy jam that’s pure dubside pleasure.
