Littlefoot - J BASSLINE VOl 1 - DJ MIX

Back in 2008 a lot of different scenes in the UK dance music underground were crossing over. One sound mostly confined originally to London and radio stations like Rinse FM was UK Funky. 

As a DJ back then primarily playing Dubstep and Grime, UK Funky was an adjacent sound which instantly made sense to me yet felt far enough removed to warrant it's own section on our radio show on Sub FM.

I ended up playing on Wednesday nights at a short lived event at what was then Market Bar in Nottingham called Boom Room, which was promoted by people associated with Dubstep and DnB nights in town.

This is a mix of stuff I used to play back then, some of it is original UK Funky, some of is weird crossover stuff and some is just straight up Afro inspired House that mixed well.

Perfect for a sunny day time boogie or sweaty t shirt friendly evening.

My tribute mini mix to one of my favourite producers of all time, the Bassline Queen BIG ANG!

Big Ang helped pioneer the Bassline sound by mixing her own influences of Speed Garage, Organ House, Jungle and the Old Skool UK Rave sounds of UK Underground music past.

For me she nails the melodic and catchy side of the sound flipping RnB and House vocals into bass heavy and always banging 4 on the floor belters.

These tracks span back 20 years to the early 00s and show the roots of her sound and influence.

Littlefoot - ALL BIG ANG DJ Mix

Unless you've been sat down and schooled or are.. from the North you'd easily think Bassline is this post UKG thing which fell out of the sky in 2007 when Heartbroken was riding high briefly.

In reality Bassline, or Bassline House or just Niche as we called it in Nottz in the mid 00s is an entire genre of it's own with a parallel, yet separate, evolution of English dance music alongside the omnipresent UK Garage scene coming out of London.

Of course the two raving genres are so intertwined at this point both in DJ circles and online platforms it doesn't really need finger wagging when people get them mixed up.

In reality Bassline has its own sub genres, regional scenes, label aesthetics etc in the same way UKG split into a million pieces in the early 00s.

This mix is all tunes I love off old Niche/Casa Loco tapes I've downloaded over the years off Soulseek and found on Youtube late at night.

Expect to hear almost hilariously super heavy Speed Garage, pumping Euro House Organs, pounding four on the four sassy House classics from the UK and more inside this mix. All sped up to the tempo of gurning heart pounding ravers feet.

This was made on Rekordbox but the audio is sourced from all manner of vinyl rips, best versions of my wax I could find online and a few digital re-issues which have appeared in the last few years. So it's warts and all. Enjoy the vinyl crunch!

Littlefoot - Imaginary Niche Tape Vol 1 - "The Roots Of Bassline" DJ MIX

Those who study their UK Dance Music lore will have surely heard that Bassline existed for about 6 months and disappeared instantly in around 2008.

This, of course, is total bollocks. Bassline existed from the early 00s as a distinct genre with its own evolutions, sub genres and regional scenes. 

What is true that when the 4x4 grimey sub genre got absolute massive briefly with MCs and those looking for a darker more aggro clubbing experience a lot of folks slid into a hedge like Homer Simpson.

In reality the fall out from that time made some of the genres most progressive and impressive music and apart from DJ Q (who has literally never stopped doing this) picking out this sound and Midlands DJs like Apostle and TRC it was actually fairly hard to find this stuff online.

It was briefly dubbed "UKB", which is UKG mixed with B(assline) which is just really confusing because everyone fucking argues about both genres (they are the same thing! they are literally completely different! fuck you!).

I found out about this stuff by accident. I was following the 4x4 scene pretty hard at that point and making trips to Birmingham to pick up 12"s and recommendations from the staff at Tempest on the way back from the East to West Midlands. 

Imagine my surprise when my tune Sell My Soul (one of the first I ever made no less) had been picked up by both DJ Q and TRC a year later and was appearing on sets from those who made the 4x4 scene blow up.

I instantly go on Myspace and started linking with these producers and DJs and we remarked on how we'd basically come up with the same sound - mixing 2 Step with Bassline and Grime sounds - by accident and how we should trade tunes and collab.

This mix is the fallout of that aggressive tune swapping from me. 

I really loved this stuff and wanted it deeply to be the next wave of UKG as I was deep in a jaded headspace about what was being called Future Garage at the time, which I was associated with.

I hope people enjoy this. Genuinely this stuff still blows my mind in how just FUCKING SICK the production is. The drums, the insane synthesis and general alien vibez! I still speak to a lot of these folks, if I don't and you see your bits here send me a DM!

What is the M1 Organ? is it a bass? a melody? a drum?

Scientists have spent decades trying to discover why this sound, and this sound alone, instantly makes people dance when played really fucking loud.

This mix is all original 00s Organ Bassline; to my mind the ultimate "it's 2 AM and I just wanna dance in a pitch black room" music genre.

These tunes are almost exclusively bootlegs / reworkings of older House, RnB and Pop tracks. This is the sassy, emotional and gurning sound of the Midlands and the North in the mid 00s.

Following a recent inclusion on Dim Sum’s EP series Rice Cooker Riddims, Nottingham producer, mastering engineer and DJ Littlefoot aka Joe Caithness returns for his first vinyl release in almost a decade (the Well Rounded “Interplanetary” EP going for tasty dosh on Discogs now). Codeine Espresso 1 compiles four rugged dancefloor tracks aimed squarely at DJs who wanna start a rave in the arcade or suck the club into a SNES mid set.
 
The EP contains a mix of tempos displaying a love of classic ruff ‘n’ tuff 2-step and 4x4 garage with a sickly sweet, at times psychedelic, video game music-infused spin on things.

Codeine Espresso opens with 135 BPM sexy robot shuffler “Oh Boi”, a sugary, spacious vocal-focused 2-step track driven by tape driven 808 bouncey bass lines.

Track 2 kicks up the tempo to 140 with a mid 00s Dexplicit / Sticky influenced rolling 4x4 bass stomper, featuring sad alien vocals glistening over awkwardly rigid hi-hats on “Freakin Wid Mi”.
 
Side B starts with a 135 BPM in-the-pocket slinker “Rice N Pea”, as the sun comes out and the pixelated rum and cokes are served and the jerk tofu is in the grill, leading to a Todd Edwards-inspired cut-up dreamscape breakdown.
 
We close with a ruffer and darker dub style calling on the ravey and borderline acid sounds of dusty breakbeat garage of days gone, “Inspiritus”. Triplet drums and a constantly evolving and twisting bassline make this a 2am mid-tempo 135 BPM dancefloor grabber.
