Written for my river project on Johnsons Island Brentford. Inspired by Ryan at Johns Boat Yard who told me life is run by the tide when you live on a narrow boat.

The River 

Verse 1
Some days there’s barely a ripple
On the surface of the river, as she flows
Perfect skin, gently scarred 
by feather branches of the willows
Kingfisher dives for his prize
On the sunny side where the trees grow wild

Chorus
I’ve seen two sides of the river
The rapid and the calm
The power of the river 
Can soothe and she can harm

Verse 2
Some days rage spills over
Bursting the boundaries of the shore
mournful reflections, 
Shattered by shrapnel in the storm 
Full moon skies, high tides
Reach the barren side, where birds can’t hide

Bridge
What she takes she won’t give back
Still draws me to the glossy bank
Whether she’s blue or black
There’s two sides …
