Wooden Shjips guitarist Ripley Johnson started Moon Duo in 2009 with his partner Sanae Yamada, and what began as a more stripped down and mobile version of the Woodn Shjips project has grown into a distinctive unit with it's own particular tact across the wavy seas of psych and drone. Using the concision of this two person unit, with a stripped down instrumentation that includes Johnson on guitar and vocals, Yamada on organ, and with beats provided through sampling or drum machine, the duo makes the most of these tighter confines while pulling into ever greater focus the sprawling and spacious territories traveled by Johnson in Wooden Shjips. The inspiration for these two projects was born of a time when Johnson had taken a break from playing music. Still an ardent fan, his listening had lead him to an interest in free jazz and improvisational music, as well as the more minimal, mantra-like work of Terry Riley. Seeing a creative opening offered in the melding of these approaches, he launched his own brand of space rock using droning organ work, spiraling guitar, and repetitive, motorik drum rhythms to create an all-absorbing take on psych music. While this formula is evident in both projects, as well as musical nods to eminent predecessors such as The Velvet Underground, Silver Apples, Suicide, and Spacemen 3, Moon Duo's approach is necessarily more focused and less jam oriented than Wooden Shjips. The bands newest LP, Mazes (Sacred Bones Records), recorded mostly at home in San Francisco over a series of weeks in April of 2010, and later mixed at a friend's studio in Berlin, sees an evolution in the bands sound as the vocals are given more prominence in the mix, and with this extra attention paid to Jonson's lyrics the songs almost seem to take on a pop dimension. The band also recently released a remix album of this newest work aptly titled Mazes Remixed (Sacred Bones), and it finds a slew of like-minded psychonauts reworking the album. Folks like Pete "Sonic Boom" Kember, formerly of Spacemen 3, Purling Hiss, solo project of Mike Polizze, guitarist for Philly  jam-punks Birds of Maya, psychedelic nob-twisters Psychic Ills, and more take these songs apart and put them back together creating a strange loop by which the serpent seems to swallow it's own tail. Medical Records continues it’s unearthing of extremely rare singles in it’s Electroconvulsive Therapy series. Once again, teaming up with Crispy Nuggets blog (crispynuggets.blogspot.com), we have assembled yet another collection of long out of print and underground singles and rare tracks. This compilation includes 3 complete A + B sides from 7” singles + 4 other rare songs (2 from cassette, 1 A side of a 7”, and 1 track featured on a rare 80s compilation LP). All original tracks are impossible to find for less than a mint on the collector’s market. The first 2 tracks are by Belgium’s Tipical Me from the Claustrofobian b/w Pope No Hope 7”. These 2 tracks are perfect synth pop in every way. The second artist is UK’s Secession, and we have included their debut 7” released in 1983. Though known for their later more electronic based pop and dance tracks, these two tracks display their earlier dark beginnings with chilling guitars and a more early 4AD aesthetic. Both tracks from the 7” are included. The third artist is France’s Leidenschaft who released one lone 3-song cassette in 1986 with 2 of the tracks featured here. Leidenschaft could loosely be compared to early Clan of Xymox with French cold wave leanings. The 2 cuts are very atmospheric and lovely indeed. Back to the UK, we included the wonderfully minimal A + B sides of the rare 1984 7” by Black Fantasy. Original copies of this single have been selling for insanely high prices these days. 2 more tracks were also included on this compilation which complete the theme nicely. V.U.D. was an Italian outfit who recorded a track entitled “Look!” which was included on the “First Relation” v/a compilation LP released in 1983 on Mask Productions and curated by Lisfrank. Quirky and undeniably catchy, we absolutely adore this track as will everybody who hears it. The last track included on this LP is the A side of the rare 1984 7” by UK’s Almost Alone entitled “Blue City”. Dense and atmospheric synth pop with definite New Romantic tendencies, this track is a perfect closing track for this diverse collection. This collection will certainly appeal to fans of rare minimal synth, early synth pop, or EBM. This compilation allows anyone who has desired to have one or all of these quite expensive tracks on vinyl in the best sound quality possible. Additional mastering by Martin Bowes at the Cage, UK. This compilation and reissue is specially prepared for Record Store Day on high-quality 180gram blue and magenta “half and half” colored vinyl. Limited edition.

Ripit‘s “Live At MS Stubnitz, 8th April 2016” can be found on National Crime History, an upcoming compilation of artists from Belgium’s re-burgeoning Industrialist Movement. Curated by the Belgian labels Silken Tofu and Idiosyncratics, both known for cross-pollinating various strains of Industrial, Techno, Noise and Ambient, National Crime History will feature tracks from Onrust, Icon Template, Orphan Swords, as well as Nicolas Esterle‘s “radical electronics” project, Ripit. Esterle began his musical activities as a black metal guitarist in 1995, before turning to analog electronics in 1998, and he continues to use a combination of modular synths and vintage drum machine/mixer to create a heady brand of ambience.

On “Live At MS Stubnitz, 8th April 2016“, Ripit takes full advantage of the Hamburg venue’s previous existence as a large fishing vessel, with the kind of monumental sound that resonates from hull to hull. Metallic smears of mist open the performance and they slither across the sound space in a slow motion dissolve like long rolling waves. Eventually, a submarine hum joins the aquatic textures while heavily delayed single beats ping-pong in a zoned-out half-rhythm. Esterle’s minimal ambiance is soon beset by battering washes of noisy sonic spray and a slow beating primal throb that gathers into a face melting cloud of black drone. Continuing to float thru these outer zones, Ripit eventually unleashes a mind-blowing array of laser cut bits that fly around the space in glitched chaos. Sounding ancient and alien all at once, “Live At MS Stubnitz, 8th April 2016” proves Belgium’s New Industrialists are up to no good! And, that’s just fine with us.
