The Orb founder Dr Alex Paterson has been an extremely busy man of late. Having helmed the prolific ambient house collective for over three decades, he's now adding several new ventures to his evergrowing arsenal.

Among these are a fresh new label, Orbscure Recordings, which will be a platform for Alex's output under his various guises. Launched under Robin Collins' Cooking Vinyl imprint, the label will also be an opportunity for Alex to show off his A&R skills, an area he cut his teeth in for EG Records. First up is a collaborative release from himself and fellow Orb member Andy Falconer under the name Sedibus, which was predominantly masterminded remotely and marks the pairs first work together in almost 30 years.

On top of the new label and the fresh collaboration, Alex has also announced the release of ‘Babble on an' Ting: Alex Paterson's Incredible Journey Beyond the Ultraworld with The Orb’, a book written by close friend and journalist Kris Needs that documents his life from childhood through to The Orb's activities and his brand spanking new label.

It's a wonder he managed to find the time to steer the ship for this week's Monday Is OK mix. It is literally what the doctor ordered—he also prepped the Hors d'oeuvres, set the table and paired it with an interview about various bits and bobs—so get yourself comfortable and let Alex helm the boat safely out of Plymouth...

This mix is really just an acknowledgement of my lifelong love of arpeggiators and excitement for this new wave of arpeggiated synth stuff combined with some deeper drones and desert psych influences. I’m living totally off grid way out in the Mohave desert near Joshua tree, where this mix was recorded. My studio is solar powered ( no other option out here), there’s an exhilarating feeling to know that the photons running through the circuit boards of my machines emanated from the surface the Sun just 8 mins and 20 seconds prior. Of late, I’ve been more focused on my band ‘The Acid’ and pursuing my lifelong dream of living off grid and figuring out how to build a house than DJing. Incase you missed it we ( The Acid) put out a debut album called ‘Liminal’ and more recently we scored a documentary film ‘the bomb’ a documentary about the story of nuclear weapons. We have been touring film festivals, performing the score in a 360 immersive environment live to the film. In December we performed it live at the Nobel peace prize ceremonies in Oslo which was in incredibly inspiring and moving experience for me. Nicola Cruz - Essential Mix 2020-12-05

The Essential Mix is a weekly radio show on BBC Radio 1 currently broadcast between 0:00 - 2:00 AM UK time on Saturday morning. Originally broadcast on 30 October 1993, the Essential Mix features contemporary DJs and music producers of electronic dance music. The show has been presented since its inception by Pete Tong and features an uninterrupted two-hour mix from a different artist each week, overlaid with occasional continuity announcements delivered by Tong. With a broadcast run in excess of 25 years, the Essential Mix is one of the longest-running programmes in the current BBC Radio 1 schedule, and is one of very few Radio 1 shows which is not broadcast live.
