Chicago’s got so much soul. From the warm-hearted people, the comfort food, to it’s rich musical history rooted in gospel, blues, and jazz… Soul runs deep in the Windy C. Just turn on the radio when you’re there, and you’re guaranteed to hear Marvin, Luther, or Anita at any given moment. I’ve been lucky enough to visit Chicago on the regular, and no trip would be complete without a stop at my favorite shop in the South Side, Mr. Peabody Records. I’d spend hours searching for rare boogie and obscure disco tracks on wax, which Mr. Peabody’s was known for. Mark Grusane, one of the owners, would play records for me while I shopped, and after awhile, he started picking up on what I was digging. On a recent trip, Mark was playing a smooth, buttery track, with infectious vocals that just hit me. I asked “Yo, what’s this?” He said, “Oh, you want steppers?” Steppers, or 2-Step soul, are mellow, mid-tempo groovers perfect for steppin’, a mid-70′s dance phenomenon that blew up in Chicago… Mark was playing “My Love Don’t Come Easy” by Jean Carn, a classic stepper, and I’ve been on that tip ever since.

MIDWAY is my latest mix that dips into the stepper sound — modern soul, R&amp;B, and smooth grooves. It’s a collection of mellow steppers and mid-tempo soul inspired by Chicago. Step to classics by Jeffree, Starvue, Mtume, Archie Bell &amp; The Drells, and Breakwater… Then glide to modern cuts by The Sunburst Band, Xscape, Martine Girault, and Erykah Badu. Selections include records I picked up at Mr. Peabody Records along with favorites played at SWEATER FUNK, San Francisco’s infamous all-vinyl boogie and modern soul party. In an instant... He was gone. The greatest entertainer of our generation, the King Of Pop, MICHAEL JACKSON passed away at the age of 50 on June 25th 2009 in what seemed like a matter of hours on the internet, twitter, and TV... And while we were all greatly saddened by the loss, I felt a bit of relief... The latter part of MJ's career had been marred by controversy and turmoil. Physically, he was deteriorating right before our eyes. It was only fitting that Mike go out this way... Forever young. Problem is, OPM is not very easy to find in the States, so i can only dig when i’m in the Philippines. When my man ET IV asked me to play his party ASTIG, I was hyped, but also kinda nervous because I wasn’t sure if I even had enough records for an entire set. But I did, and had a blast playing some of my fav OPM joints out in public! This mix was inspired by the set I dropped that night... Back in the 90's, there was a scene bubblin' in The Bay that would spawn a whole generation of Filipino American Freestyle and R&B groups. Artists, like Jocelyn Enriquez, would pave the way, becoming one of the first Fil-Am's to sign a major label record deal. More acts would follow, and it became common to hear acts like Jocelyn Enriquez, Kai, Pinay, OneVoice, M:G, Buffy, and Jaya (to name a few) playing at family parties, cotillions, night clubs, on concert stages, and even the radio. Most of these groups were based in the San Francisco Bay Area, repping Pinole, Union City, Berkeley, and even Vallejo.

This mix is dedicated to that special time, when girls rocked pumped up hair, fellas rode the cars that went BOOM, and Filipino R&B groups ruled The Bay. I included some of my fav Bay Area Freestyle, Hi-NRG, and R&B classics along with some guilty pleasures from that era. Pump it up!
