Here's a song I wrote back in late summer 2012, and forgot to upload it until just now. 
This piece was inspired by a brilliant film called "The Piano" that I had been dying to see when I was in the fifth grade and finally saw earlier this summer. 

This song was my interpretation of a colorful and brilliant woman being trapped inside of a (literally) mute newly-wed who is stuck between the repression of an arranged marriage with a man she doesn't know, her true love, her young daughter, and her only form of expression, a piano.

The Mute Maiden

I came up with the starting riff and progression, and then improvised some melodies in the middle. It's rough, and I haven't worked on it in weeks, but I actually plan on turning the basic idea into a [progressive] synth-poppy song (think "Depeche Mode", except maybe not AS awesome as Depeche Mode :)

Back in early October I was sitting in the nosebleeds at the Hollywood Bowl watching Peter Gabriel and his band do unimaginable things with the entire "So" album straight through. It was theatrical, enthusiastic and the old man can still kick it after all. 

Later on, my Godmother Ann introduced me to his version of Lou Reed's "The Power of the Heart", and gave me her magenta running jacket in exchange for a cover of the song. I was game. Weeks later while flipping through the pages of Paul Zollo's "Songwriters on Songwriting" I stumbled upon a very insightful interview with the legendary Mr. Reed himself. I ended up listening to the original version by Lou Reed and decided that was the version I'd like to cover. No doubt his version OWNS mine, but this was a very enjoyable experience, and a challenge I desperately needed. So, Ann, this one's to YOU for being the reason why my life is literally "rock n' rollin'".  I love you!

The Power of the Heart - (A Lou Reed Cover)

Here is this morning's improv piece. 

Please forgive me, as it is extremely difficult to write an instrumental without giving it a cheesy title. But REALLY: when I was a little girl, I was told that a lot of the stars you see are just traveling light from a star that actually died millions of years ago. That holds a valuable concept, that, for example, long after someone dies, they are still remembered and loved. Did I capture that well in this piece? Let me know!

Improv No 8 - A Star Dies, But the Light Still Shines

The lyrics came together slowly, as I spent more and more time each day asking myself "what do I believe in?" I've developed my own little "theory" as to how I think things probably work, or could possibly work, that resonates with me, but I've accepted that theories can change over time the more one learns and experiences. 
My current beliefs fall under the label "agnostic"; not as in "uncertain and confused", but, for me, it's so much more than whether or not I believe in a god, or THE God, and after all, the definition is variable. 
Think about this: the laws on the conservation of matter state that energy/matter cannot be created nor destroyed. All things in the universe have energy, we radiate it, generate it. When we pass away, where does that energy go? Have you ever heard of the mysterious 21 grams (excluding excrement) that leaves the body after it dies? I sometimes think that that's the spirit. Now my only question is "Where does this energy and weight go?" 
This song conceptualises my personal experience over the years with prayer (or focused mindset), my thoughts on god (or some sort of higher power), and how I'm ready to accept that my beliefs have changed, and very well could change any time, the more I know, and the more I grow.

Prayer with No Answer

This morning was spent sipping bullet-proof coffee out of a bottomless mug while reading a biography of The Doors, learning that Jim Morrison was a prankster and a rebel, instead of the "good" boy I thought he always came off as. 
After that I was inspired to sit down at the piano and do some improv, and, after about half-an-hour, this was the end result. 
I was aiming for a sort of Honky-Tonk or Rag-Time feel to it, with a very bitter and empty twist and so I ended up naming it "Johnny's Saloon Mug" after Betty Smith's classic novel "A Tree Grows In Brooklyn", at the part where (spoiler alert!) the girls' father dies from alcoholism, and she receives the mug with his name engraved on it that he used almost every night to go out drinking away his sorrows. It was the only thing left of him that she had. It was probably the most somber moment in the entire book, in my opinion.

Johnny's Saloon Mug

This is a song I literally wrote just last night (April 23rd), so it's (OBVIOUSLY) still in the works, needs lots of touching up, and this is really only the beginning of a bigger ensemble. 
The guitar part was inspired entirely by Led Zepplin's own Jimmy Page, especially when he whips out a mandolin, a 12-string... or, a violin bow. ;) As for the lyrics and vocals, I've been pretending to be Jim Morrison all week, but it doesn't look like it's working yet... maybe I need cooler pants?

So, for feedback, I would dig something constructive, because that's what I need.

Killsong

I started cooking up the lyrics very slowly over the past year. It all started with the term "Wallflower" which I had just heard of and found the meaning; 

A person who has no one to dance with or who feels shy, awkward, or excluded at a party.

This term particularly resonated with me, not because I literally had no one to dance with (though Dave Gahan would be nice), but because I had just moved away from all of my friends to an old city I had very dark times with early on in my life, and what with homeschooling (though I love it) I did find myself (and still am) extremely secluded and isolated, which were the exact feelings that sprouted 'Wallflower' itself. It's suppose to resemble a lonely child showing clear signs of emotional drainage and the 'parents' (the subconscious, or your reflection) making you realize you're a teenage decay.

The intro was inspired by The Police's "Don't Stand So Close to Me", with the synth and ska-guitar, and the beginning vocals were actually inspired by the Tears for Fears B-side 'The Conflict': "When one of us is making, the other is taking
There's no end to end
When one of us is trying, the other is lying
There's no end to end"

which always got stuck in the back of my head.
