Q: Thanks for your contribution to our mix series, how did you prepare for this mix, and how would you describe the eventual result?

Thank you for inviting me ! This mix is 100% vinyl. I prepared it going through the records I bought last year, which involve some news and reissues as well as some older stuff I found at flea markets. Once I got a direction, I dug in my record collection to excavate records that fit in which I’d never used in previous mixes, and then tried to make sense out of it all. Somehow once a mix is recorded, I always discover links between tracks that I hadn’t noticed before and tell myself a story. The result is a mix of easy listening, synthpop, library music and balearic boogie.

Q: Is there a record in the mix that you associate with a special story?

Indeed, the Daniele Patucchi soundtrack of Turbo Time, which had been in my wantlist for almost a decade. Last summer I went to visit Florence in Italy, mainly to see its monuments and art legacy, but on the last day of my trip I decided to check out the Mercato delle Pulci, with no expectations whatsoever. After going through records for a few minutes, there it was, in perfect condition, waiting for me. It’s not a crazy story but one of those unexpected and effortless digging moments that stays with me after.

Q: How do you dig for new music, and/or what kind of things arouse your interest in Music? 

I don’t have one particular way of digging, I just keep my eyes and ears open. Right now the social networks play a big part in bringing music to my ears, whether it’s groups, people I follow or friends, especially when it comes to new releases or reissues. But my preference still goes to physical digging, in record shops or at flea markets. It means spending a lot of time on the field but it usually pays off and it’s a priceless feeling. In music, I guess I’m looking for something that makes me feel alive. Sometimes it’s a beat that makes me want to dance, sometimes an emotion through lyrics or a melody. I like to be surprised too.

Q: One record you will never let go, and one that doesn’t want to leave your wantlist?

One that I will never let go is Lait de Coco by Maya. And among the many records that don’t want to leave my wantlist, there is a 12’’ by Eddy Louiss called Caraïbes / Les Éléphants / Taureau. Maybe one day…

Q: Music bonds people. Any djs/projects/shops/etc.. you would like to shout out? 

There are a lot to mention, firstly my friends in Paris : Les Yeux Orange, LeonxLeon, Vidal Benjamin, Masterphil, the record shop Babaluma… Sara Mautone from Florence. Also Patrick Ryder from Manchester. His label Talking Drums is on fire right now, check it out if you haven’t. As Gary’s Gang once said, « keep on makin’ music » !

Feel the magic as Masafumi Onishi AKA Telly digs deep into his vinyl collection to provide us with this upbeat mix of fantasy acid-soaked House/Italo Jammers. A nod to Chicago & Detroit.

Telly devoted 10 years of his time as a manager/main event booking coordinator at Kobe’s TroopCafe/club. You could say he’s regarded as a recognised contributor to the Japanese music scene for his role in ushering prominent local and international acts, and putting Kobe on the music map.

The music will never stop there as he’s recently been experimenting with studio recordings on his Troop Music label, conjuring up some phat rolling beats that once again, draw inspiration from the US. Imagine MPC-style drum programming combined with snappy disco riffs & vocals

Recently, Detroit's Motor City Wine Label released a 4-track dizzying sample-based beatdown under the DCTL duo moniker of Telly and DJ Duct. Be sure to check these ones!
