When I turn on CNN or new updates every morning, my heart bleeds helplessly when I see the world turning upside down and all I can offer is a song of HOPE!  Haiti, Indonesia, Sudan, Afghanistan, China, US, Iraq and on and on I could go on for days. 
It may be as far as watching it through the screen and it may also be as close as watching your loved one pass away. Somehow, it used to be so far, but now it’s right here and we have to find a way to deal with it; such is life!
One sunny afternoon after sitting in joburg traffic for a few days, I had to record this tune “Searching” with Hope that it could pass across that message of hope to somebody who needs it most.

SAFARI is a journey when translated from swahili. 
I am on a journey and so are so many other young girls and women not just across the continent but across the globe. When we go on a journey, we pack clothing to suit the trip. We make these wardrobe choices based on the weather, the destination amongst other factors. One of the things that I have to curate when getting ready for travel is my playlist and my clothes because those two things really matter. When I have the right music and have the right wardrobe in my case, only then am I really on SAFARI. Mon homme is a French spoken word highlighted by beautiful harmonies and melodies around the story of "The Man" translated into English as "My Man.

Out of all my music, this one is very special because it it the only song I have not written, however it still feels like it flows from the core of my soul.

While I sat down to write, and could not not come up with anything juicy enough, my sista from anatha mama, #ValerieTraore srote this joint and quite frankly, and when I finally got the final draft and went through it, I just got into studio and banged this baby out from my soul because it was complete and needed no tweak.

The 1st time I did this, it was #soul and nothing less, this time round I have taken her to another place. Take a step into this Awete Remix  and get aroused by Kevin’s solo acoustic guitar riff that steps back at the whiff of my strong earthy vocals connecting the best of Blues, Soul, Indie and New Age World music. 

On this remix, I think I have brought back the blues stronger than ever with play on my lyrics and general delivery.

Dakar music lovers embrace Liz Ogumbo at Le Djoloff, during Dak’Art 2018

KenSoul innovator and Afropolitan flagbearer, Liz Ogumbo, has just completed a series of brilliantly received shows as part of Senegal’s Dak’Art 2018.

The Johannesburg-based singer, songwriter and performer showcased material off her new album, KenSoul, The Lotus Chapter with a live band of top local musicians, comprising Oumar Sow (guitar), Laye Seck (bass) and Albert Gnanho (drums).

Over her live acclaimed show at Le Djoloff in Dakar, and her photographic installation with FAAP, Liz underlined her growing standing as one of the continent’s foremost creatives.

Her live perfomance took place at the city’s Djoloff Boutique Hotel on May 4th, and her articstic flair was well received as the featured guest at FAAP’s May 5th art installation at the Collège Saint-Michel in Dakar. Titled Carrefour Off de la Biennale, the exhibition brought together photographic artists from around the world, providing a rich and powerful backdrop for Liz’s creative offering beyond music.

“It was such an honour to share my KenSoul at Le Djoloff, during a prime time in Senegal, soundtracking this year’s Biennale de l’Art Africain Contemporain Dak’Art,” says Liz. “Even though Dak’Art is about the visual arts, it embodies everything that I stand for as a multi-faceted artist and African creative. The incredible response of audiences in Dakar was a real affirmation of my KenSoul sound and visual experience -  and we’re already planning more shows for later this year.”

It’s been nearly eight years Ogumbo’s debut album, KenSoul,  announced the arrival of a major African music talent. During those years, Ogumbo matched her matched her music creativity with her work as a fashion designer, host and producer of Fashion Lab Africa TV and radio as well as creative director of #LSHW Lipstick Skirts Heels & Wine.

Sophisticated yet edgy, Liz’s second album, KenSoul, The Lotus Chapter stands out in a musical landscape populated by artists who frequently play it safe, both musically and lyrically.  

Among the highlights on the album is  “Whatchyu Know About Her?” – an unforgettable single that confronts what it means to be a woman in the 21st century. Other standouts are the reggae-inflected “Exotic Love Affair”, which features Xander Pratt on the only vocal collaboration on the album, while songs like “Oringo Bayoyo” and “Msenangu” speak directly, and compellingly, to Ogumbo’s Kenyan  heritage.

There are few Africans whose creative journey has been as wide-ranging, singular and successful as the one travelled by Liz Ogumbo. 

Over the past decade, this formidably focused Kenyan has established herself as creative entrepreneur whose work in music, fashion, television, radio and wine. Through all these, she shares an enviable commitment to excellence while fostering relationships and projects that advance the African creative industries globally. 

Whether it’s writing, recording and performing her original music, designing for her eponymous fashion label, hosting and producing Fashion Lab Africa TV and radio, or penetrating the wine market through her latest venture,, ‘Liz Ogumbo Wines,’ Liz is unquestionably the new face of modern Africa. She is as much rooted in the continent she loves as the global community that is fast embracing her irresistible vision. 

In conveying her creative output, Liz came up with a new, all-encompassing term—KenSoul. “KenSoul represents my Kenyan soul that allows me to stylishly weave stories of my Kenyan origin and global influences into the KenSoul experience,” she says of this description that is as original as the person behind it.

KenSoul is also the title of Liz’s first album, released to acclaim in 2010 - and is the reference point for her recently released follow-up, KenSoul, The Lotus Chapter. Traversing multiple musical influences and expressed in Luo, Swahili, English and French (all of which Liz speaks fluently), Liz’s two albums reflect her genre-agnostic sound, her Kenyan soul and her life experiences. Her humorous writing and skilled storytelling, combined with her smoky, sultry vocal abilities and mature yet playful sound, mark out Liz as one of Africa’s most notable artists.

“I come from a tribe called the Luo, which is one of 42 tribes in Kenya and is rooted in the western part of Kenya, by Lake Victoria,” she explains. “The Luo culture is very rich; music and dance is a part of our DNA.” 

Liz is named after her great-great-grandmother Elizabeth Loye, a talented singer and performer who was born around the 1860s and lived until the 1940s. 

Both of Liz’s albums feature songs from her childhood and traditional melodies – among them “Maro Pamore” off her 2010 debut KenSoul. “I love the melodies of that song and what it stands for,” says Liz of the recording (featuring Zambian-raised rapper, Zubz). KenSoul, The Lotus Chapter maintains the mix of genres that have influenced Liz (soul, hip hop, reggae, jazz, and blues) as well as the roots influence of the likes of Taraab music on songs like “Oringo Bayoyo” and “Msenangu”. As Liz puts it, “When I sing in my vernacular I know what I’m singing about”. 

Another influence on Liz’s creativity and music in particular, is Chakacha—a Swahili cultural dance that Liz learnt growing up in Kenya and which she describes as “the most sensual dance I know of beyond my geographical boundaries”. Those who’ve seen Liz perform live have witnessed how she weaves Chakacha into her live show, adding another layer to what is one of the most uplifting, near spiritual and joyous performances in contemporary African music. 

A standout feature of Liz’s energetic live shows is the visual element which makes full use of her unique fashion sense. The latter takes expression and influence from her fashion brand label highlighted by bold, elegant, timeless pieces that embrace self-definition through sleek cuts and simple yet provocative designs. Established eleven years ago, Liz Ogumbo’s Fashion offering epitomises attitude that comes from the inside—and this part of her creative life is as much a part of Liz’s soul as music is.
