As Auto Jones: Auto Jones is an organic machine designed to interrupt your programing, engage you with life and allow your ‘You’.

The idea that our brains can behave like computers and our emotions are programs with apps running everywhere. One such app is the matrix of love that sometimes needs to be reset, quit or even deleted so we can start a new.

Story

Falling up stairs came to be after Liz and I watched a series of BBC documents on the Hit maker. Not the one about Niles Rogers, which is a amazing the other one about Guy Chambers mostly famous for his sting of hits with Robbie Williams. What stood out was his success rate that at the time was a hit for every 33 songs he produced. He was explaining his process of writing and through that I furthered developed my writing method, which shared some things in common. I will write a post about that later.

This was originally intended as a ballad with soft swooping piano melodies and orchestral arrangements but we couldn’t get it to work and over the years it caused numerous studio arguments. I was working on some calypso Soca music for my Urban Soca Collection when one night mixing the vocals I played around with different backings tracks I was working on. When I hit a create wall and search my unfinished groves and I merged the Soca track and it worked I did not change the apposing arrangement to make it fit, just let it be.

Inspiration

The main inspiration cam from an old Soca music song I used to listen to at my grandmothers parties. It was performed by Arrow called ‘Dollar Wine’. My original indication was to create a fresh version on the song, which I then remixed that song to the sound you hear, the piano came later. Art is always evolving.

This is the first time Liz and I have appeared in song together but not the last.

Hurt Me is a battle cry of a song, a stark warning that what has happened will no longer be acceptable. With luscious catchy chorus, pointe lyrics and a catchy tune. This is the first official song produced by short lived Besound Productions. Kelly is a fantastic talent whose time has not yet come.

I first met the amazingness that is Kelly Minot about 14 years ago while cutting my chops at Archway Recording studio, figuring out to process of commercial hit making. We made a few songs and the years past. I promised as soon as I had the real thing going I would get her back. During my time at Leeds College of Music I created Besound Productions with Marlon Hodlin and Tim Gait. We were in need of some label grabbing songs and I felt to heat to produce the goods. Locking myself away I created some of my most inspirational melodies and this was one of them.

Acoustic treatment
This version of the single is acoustically stripped down, we created this as an idea of a live show to enter a competition. It had to be completely acoustic with 3 people max. The instruments were designed as a guide to the live show with Liz on Violin, Kelly on vocals and myself on percussion with all providing backing vocals.

The original sonic idea
I made a list of the songs I instantly liked the first time I heard them, The list included Britney’s Toxic, Girls Aloud’s Sounds of the underground and Hard Fi’s Living for the weekend. I used the Classis 60’s drum beat and a simple guitar hook with some Sci-fi sounds to pad the melody. I wanted to bring a funky RnB Dance song to the world and position Kelly as the queen of the baseline sound.

The Idea as always was to record the song with live instruments to be more of a band and string quartet however we never got that far, The Company folded after a few more projects but it was a good effort and learning experience. I cannot wait to work with Kelly again.
