Mothering and Making in a Pandemic

Mothers Who Make Exeter is on a mission to amplify the voices, stories, ideas and talents of m/others. We are proud to present FIVE new audio artworks, produced by m/others in Devon as part of Mothers on the Air.

1. My Mothers Voice, by Amy Adkin
A blend of sounds and conversations with women, reflecting on their mothers’ voices and memories from childhood.  Includes sound contributions from artist Fania Katz. Amy Adkin is a mother and a creative, exploring themes through writing, storytelling and various other art forms.

2. Arts and Minds, by Dr Kate Massey-Chase
Kate explores how the arts are critical to our health and wellbeing.
We hear from local women and non-binary people about their own relationship with the arts and its role in their lives. Kate is a mother, community arts facilitator, academic, activist and writer. 

3. How Do We Raise Climate Resilient Kids? By Ellen Bulleid
A journey by a parent, trying to work out how do we best prepare
our kids for a warmer world. Ellen is a mum of two who lives in Exeter, interested in all things local and sustainable.

4. The Keeper, by Amy Chadney
A bright and passionate soundscape that explores what it is to be a m/other. Made in collaboration with Ruby Chadney, Anna Ryan, Daniel Chadney. Amy Chadney is a Devon based creator of children, art, words, lesson plans and to-do-lists.

5. City Of Hope, by Tina Lawton
An introduction to a future podcast exploring planning cities for women and girls. Tina is a mother with a passion for exploring community development, town planning and urban design. 

About the Project:
Mothers on the Air (2023)is a mentorship programme by Lizzy Humber (Mothers Who Make Exeter)in partnership with mentors Josie Sutcliffe and Natalie McGrath (Dreadnought South West) and editing support provided by sound artists Kerry Priest. 

The project is funded by Arts Council England and supported by Exeter Library, MakeTank and Dreadnought South West. The 5 audio artworks aired on International Women's Day 2023 as part of Mothers on the Air programme on Occupy The Airwaves on Phonic FM.

Mothers Who Make aims to support women and people who birth to maintain their artistic identities alongside their care giving roles, and to make motherhood better valued & more visible in society.
