Wow! Guess what Yann Tiersen just said to me? He said he loves destroying his competition with his nice tracks. Well, remixing Ker al Loch almost destroyed me. The original is so disturbingly moving it put the fear of Yann into me, could he be Any Intenser? Yes he can, because that's his anagram.

I've been playing this on piano since the 90s, I thought it about time to put it into a sequencer and add more tracks than just piano. A friend showed me the riff that starts at 2:00 when we were at college 1992-94. I don't know the origin of that, probably a computer game, knowing us, but I used it to make a whole new piece.

The Event

Deliberately mechanical, like clockwork.  It's about the average day in a mundane life. Starting with the morning alarm, but the alarm continues throughout: 'Everything I'm not, everything I'm not, why is it I try to be, everything I'm not?'

The Flight, it's a flight, a powered flight, definitely a powered flight.  I composed this in 1993 in ProTracker on a Commodore Amiga 500. But this was redone in LMMS in 2022.

The Flight

So I wrote some lyrics when I was in my mid teens and this tune just fell from the sky as I was writing them. I lost the lyrics, but remember the music well.

I'm confident the lyrics were poor anyway at that age. They told a story of two people having to reluctantly friend-zone each other as their circumstances were otherwise incompatible.

Alas, I don't sing, anyway.

My Friend

So a few weeks ago I stumbled on a YouTube video about gain staging. I'd never heard of such a thing - although I've always written music, sound engineering and production has always been a mystery to me. 

The tutorial by EDMTips explained gain staging in such an obvious way, I just had to subscribe and figure out how else I can better represent my compositions. I've really been missing out all this time.

Not even a week later, they announce a 100K subscribers remix competition, just write a dance track using a specific vocal sample... I love a challenge. I listen to plenty of dance music when writing software, but I dunno, I don't usually write music with the expectation that people might want to move to it, it seems to be more conceptual than designed to elicit any kinetic response.

I wondered if they knew what they were letting themselves in for - auditioning potentially 100,000 tracks created by hobbyists like me, ha ha! Poor things! But then I thought it would be more awful if there were too few entries, so I thought I'd better make sure there was at least one. So this is my novice attempt.

It took me a whole evening on piano to work out how I could accompany the vocal with some kind of melody, chords, general structure, then 2 weeks of clumsily fumbling around in my beloved but quirky LMMS - that crashes if I stop recording before releasing the sustain pedal - and actually make a track of it, complete with a piano solo from that first evening.

There's quite a loud inhale in the middle of the vocal sample, that made an interesting descending white noise whoosh... Hopefully not too cheap a transition for the genre.

Thanks go to EDMTips for arranging this exciting competition and their useful tutorials, but it's not their fault if this isn't to your taste - I haven't watched all their videos yet!

07:30 Radio check with base camp. Radio reception is normal. All is well.

08:00 Slight turbulence noted from Easterly direction. Correction to 1,700ft. Aircraft performing very well now.

09:10 Vast ice and snow below.

09:15 Unfamiliar mountains in the distance. Controls are slow to respond, no indication of icing. 

09:55 Encountering strong turbulence again. 

10:00 Beyond the mountain range is a green valley with great forests and rivers. Navigation instruments are spinning. 

10:05 The light here seems different. Cannot see the Sun anymore. 

10:30 Attempted to contact base camp. Radio is not functioning.

11:30 Ahead I see a city. This is impossible. Aircraft is light and buoyant. The controls refuse to respond. 

11:35 Strange aircraft closing rapidly alongside our port and starboard. A voice crackles on our radio: "Welcome to our domain! We shall land you in exactly seven minutes. Relax, you are in good hands."

11:40 We touch down with only a slight jolt. Several men are approaching. In the distance the city shimmers with colour. We move on a platform towards the glowing crystal city, with great swiftness. We descend in an elevator, and then through a hallway, with a rose colour, that seems to be emanating from the very walls themselves. Their leader tells me why I have been summoned here.

"Your race has exploded atomic bombs. We have never interfered before in your wars, but now, we must, for you have learnt to tamper with a power that is not for man. We have already delivered messages to the powers of your world, and yet, they do not listen. Composer with no preference for any genre. I try whatever suits each idea. Usually with difference between conception and result, the inevitable compromise between imagination and ability.

An artwork is an imprecise representation of an idea. Not because it contains imperfections. Even with endless skill, or when a project fully absorbs our thoughts, time to release work has to be finite.

For me, this is a hobby lacking time and resources. I still have mountains to learn. The goal is therefore not to flaunt skill, but to share ideas in anticipation that they might provoke enjoyment or personal significance. I hope that anybody who happens to find wonderment in anything I have done, also has the mindfulness to see it in everything else around them.
