Back in April of 2019, I got two tickets to see Aphex Twin play at the Avant Gardner’s Great Hall in Brooklyn, NYC. I had two tickets I managed to get thru a Brooklyn Vegan presale, & my friend Joey came with me. We drove to NYC & saw Aphex Twin live in the flesh with all his modules, his crazy visuals, & the greatest electronic music show I’ve ever witnessed. My #1 favorite concert I ever attended.

Over the next few days, we took a detour along the East Coast. The day after the show, we explored Manhattan. The next day, we hung out at Coney Island, burned some plushy stingrays in honor of Steve Irwin’s death, drove down to New Jersey to visit the liquor store from Clerks. Then, we booked a motel in Atlantic City, but it was a sketchy crystal meth kingdom, so we slept in my car that night. On the final day, we drove to Pennsylvania & made a stop in an abandoned town called Centralia; the real-life inspiration for Silent Hill.

“Centralia was once a thriving coal town, but in 1962, an underground fire ignited & has been burning ever since. Despite efforts to extinguish it, the fire spread, releasing toxic gases & making the ground unstable. By the 1980s, most residents had evacuated, leaving behind only a few structures & the now-famous Graffiti Highway. The fire is expected to burn for another 250 years.”

We were about four hours from home as it got dark & left.  Joey was asleep in the passenger seat, & I was driving.  It started thunderstorming really bad. There were no cars on the road. I could barely see in front of me & on fhe road with the rain coming down so hard. It was the worst storm I ever drove thru in my life.  I hydroplaned on the highway, went into a ditch, & slammed into a tree, totaling my car. A tree fell on top of the car. The tree missed Joey’s head & mine. I was sitting upright, as I like to when I’m driving. If I had been sitting just a lil back more or if Joey was sitting up, we would have been dead. 

(Eventually by Tame Impala was playing as we crashed, what a song to die to haha)

Police & an EMS truck came, picked us up, & took us to the hospital. Joey’s arm was broken, & I had a little bruise on my left shoulder—nothing too bad. But man, that was the worst being in there. I remember lying in one of the beds crying my eyes out, & the nurse telling me, “You guys made it. You’re alive.”

The hospital was going to kick us out if nobody came to pick us up. My parents came & picked us up. We went to the police station where they gave me a ticket. Then we drove to the wreck, & I broke down so hard just seeing the car thinking about how I almost lost my life & nearly killed my friend because I didn’t pull over.  We gathered both our stuff & went home.  What a way to end a trip to see Aphex Twin right?

I was ridden with guilt, grief, & trauma.  The aftermath of that was extremely painful & took me a while to recover from. I still get sketched out driving in thunderstorms on the highway to this day. In that time, I wrote this piano piece expressing the emotions I was feeling after the accident. This helped me heal, to translate those emotions into music, to capture those emotions was very therapeutic & playing this every time takes me back to that time in my life.

As Joey loves to put it, “We survived Silent Hill.” We moved in a year later & he’s been my best friend ever since. He’s like a brother to me, the brother I share trauma with, & I feel so blessed to have such a beautiful soul of a friend come into my life & share this experience with me & bond with him over it. My love for him will remain infinite for eternity.

Since that near fatal day, I’ve been grateful to be alive every single day since then; even on my worst days. I’m grateful to be alive to live this life, to be here with my best friend & all the other people in my life I love so much. I am eternally grateful I was given a second chance at life, & since then, this existence of mine has been extremely beautiful
