Fidra Loves To Boogie

Next up in the series we have up and coming DJ Fidra! Raised in Scotland but coming of age in the South-West, Fidra is a Bristol-based DJ who’s been collecting Jazz, Funk and Soul since he can remember. From up-tempo disco and organic 70s funk, to dirty 80s electro and boogie, Fidra brings a special focus on pulsating, energetic dance music, with his Fidra Funk Party series. He hopes to turn the spotlight on past and future classics with some lesser-known selections.

In this mix Fidra presents a Disco-Funk special, with most tracks from 79/80/81. Expect an organic, more laid-back sound than straight boogie, with some early hip hop, and afro influences also thrown in for good measure, get involved!

Dub and bonus beats mixes were the hidden treats on many '80s hip-hop 12-inch singles – tripped out tracks where re-imagined bass, drum and tape edit arrangements took center stage, and echo-drenched rap fragments floated in and out like ghostly guests. These mixes were also showcases for a generation of transcendent engineers/editors/producers – e.g. Aldo Marin, Carlos Berrios, Omar Santana, Marley Marl & others – at an early moment when hip-hop, R&B, electro and dance music comfortably comingled. Flying solo at the controls on this episode, I explore an hour of ’80s hip-hop 12-inch bonus beats and dub mixes, from the slept-on to the classic.
