Alicia Keys is one of the undisputed queens of contemporary R&B. Powerful vocals, earnest lyrics and a deep self-awareness are the main pillars that have held up her career. But what happens when you fuse ballads with basslines? For this vinyl-only co-release on Bristol imprints Eminent and Slippery Sounds, Knoxville’s Nikki Nair stands at the intersection between new and old and redefines exactly how to nail the bootleg edit.


‘If I Ain't Got You’ is a precise flurry of two-step garage and nostalgic vocals, Alicia’s lilting voice still recognisable despite the dancefloor environment. A glossy rhythm breathes life into the old classic so that it becomes a new entity, which somehow welds together the murky rave realm with the weightlessness of Summer. It’s rare for tracks to suit any given setting, but this one might just be a strong contender.

‘Show Me Love’ takes a more starry-eyed course, weaving dewy textures into a fresh whimsical appeal. There’s still a subtle nod to the past despite the more recent Alicia/Miguel sample, which comes in the form of the 2010’s grime era melodies and nostalgic soundscapes. The breakdown around the halfway mark is a particular treat; it hoists up the vocals in reverence before the first of two ice-cold, dubby drops.

They say that if you’re paying homage to one of the greats, you’ve got to do it right. But Nikki Nair goes above and beyond that into a captivating alternate reality where the rush the second time round is just as good. These bootlegs are instant classics in themselves.

Lloyd B takes centre stage for this latest OneFold Records release, with his groove-laden dance anthem ‘Dream House’. Featuring the slick R&B sounds of Stuart Rowe on vocals, the EP also serves up two mammoth remixes from Tempo Elektrik and Dirty Mango.

The London based talent’s original mix kicks off with a glossy, energetic beat paving the way straight to the dance floor, while Rowe’s polished vocals take centre stage, making for an infectious vocal-house finish.

Reining back the original on the first of the remixes is Tempo Elektrik, leading in with a stunning, cinematic build of spine-tingling proportions. Falling into a soft, hypnotic beat, the re-work slows Rowe’s vocal hook down, creating an easy-listening, syrupy sound.

Picking up the energy to round things off is Dirty Mango, with his tough, underground re-imagination of the original. A calculated explosion of sound, with varying distorted vocal loops and the familiar low, rumbling beats of your favourite late night haunts.

Otherside Mix 004 is dedicated to the warm up. That oft-misunderstood, but oh-so crucial opening set. With very few exceptions, it’s where we all start from and even though so much has changed in clubland and with the craft and culture of DJ'ing, the importance of a good warm up DJ to set the mood is still paramount. 

It’s a great opportunity to play a few of those under the radar finds, vinyl edits and personal favourites without the pressure to drop obvious anthems. It really is a rewarding experience to be able to hand over to the next DJ having done your job well, with the vibe built up just right, and the party ready to go to the next level. 

Ultimately, I think being a great warm up DJ means putting your ego to one side and understanding that a great event with memorable moments starts with you playing the right records, with the right energy, at the right time. So in that spirit, I’ve put together a 2 hour live mix of music that represents something like my ideal warm up set. Enjoy…
