We're heading into winter again. Every day I look out the window and am shocked at how dark it's gotten, and how quickly.

Last winter was the first since I moved to the Northwest twelve years ago that I didn't lose a job, a relationship, drop out of school, or otherwise go through a major disruption in my personal life. I had begun to think it was an inevitable pattern. Darkness, in my mind, became synonymous with suffering.

Last winter was different. In large part, I made it through those cold months thanks to some wonderful, patient people in my life! But, I also came to a realization of my own. Darkness - the constant throughline of my perennial depression - is not an enemy, but a healer, a soothing ghost for tired hearts and eyes. To rest under cover of darkness isn't shameful - it's a gift.

There are a lot of things to be scared of this winter. I'm lucky to say that, for me, the long nights aren't one of them.

Entelechy is a Greek term meaning, roughly, "growing into one's soul", and is used to distinguish the raw matter of the body from the full potential of the person. Sometimes people change in ways we can't follow, but that's ok! The best we can do is to let them go, and watch them become all they can be.
