Today on the show I’m talking with my close family friend Rich Olsen-Harbich. Rich grew up with German roots and wine running through his veins. After studying plants and soil at Cornell, he managed a vineyard in Bridgehampton, NY. A few years later, Rich was instrumental in establishing the North Fork on Long Island as a well-known environment for the wine industry. Using native yeast cultures, Rich’s style of wine making has created a very unique flavor for the wines we know on the North Fork. His passion for wine and food has helped him develop a refined taste that focuses on the minutiae and terroir of the wine Bedell vineyards grow. He isn’t sure what his last meal would be, but he’s certain it’ll have to include a nice champagne. Welcome to the first episode of Last Meals on Death Roux! Each week, a prominent foodie or industry member will share their story about the delicious experiences they’ve had. This week we share a conversation with local vegan Julia Girzadas. We discuss the ethics of eating meat and how to be a moral consumer. She is very astute when it comes to veganism and her own proportionality. I, on the other hand, stuttered a lot. Oh well! Episode 1 - Julia Girzadas

On this episode, I talked with local food legend John Ross. He may not be a North Fork Native, but I don’t think I’ve ever met someone who appreciates this place as much as he does. John got lots of practical experience on the line and developed a love cooking that continues to this day. He never thought in terms of “farm-to-table” or “hyper-local”, and yet he ran a successful restaurant  for nearly three decades with a focus on fresh, local, delicious food. After years in the industry, he finally had to take a step back, but he keeps active food-wise. I was pleasantly surprised to hear that he’s still cooking three course meals at home. It was a lovely chat with a kindred spirit who, shockingly, was able to come up with his last meal on the spot! Here’s to you, John! Thanks for the copy of your poetry book (oh, did I mention he’s also a poet?).
