It is undeniable that we are living in uncertain times. For those of us failing to fit the patriarchal neoliberalist mould, we have lost hope in the future. We can see capitalism is not working but we cannot yet envisage an alternative. In a world where security is no longer feasible, the only constant we can rely on is change. Regardless of one’s point of reference, we can understand that every aspect of life, physical and mental is in flux and perhaps this transience is the only thing we can depend on.

This month we have invited @midorihirano to ruminate on these ideas and create an hour of relief from these anxieties. A temporary suspension of reality, where the listener can speculate on alternate modes of existence that reject hetero-patriarchal systems of oppression.

Midori Hirano is a musician, composer and producer. She uses predominantly piano, with subtle electronic processing and field recordings. She has released nine solo albums so far including the records under her other moniker MimiCof, in which she explores the realm of experimental music and detailed rhythmic patterns, combined with an idea of drawing melodic shapes and harmonies.

“This mix is a blend of hip-hop and drill music created and made in Ghana,” says Juls on his entry. “Very raw and hardcore with dialects ranging from Fante, Ga, Twi and Hausa, with some Pidgin.”

Ghanaian Drill – Mixed by Juls

The Raf Reza interview is finally live! It was a real pleasure to host Raf and discuss his work and vision for music, we learned a lot. Raf has recently collaborated with veteran producer Ramjac Corporation to put together @orphicapparition ’s first release. Recorded in the span of a day-long studio session (a 3 hour mix chopped up into 5 tracks), this leftfield dub track is a good reflection of Raf’s chaotic journey in music. 

To honour his early influences, Raf has recorded a 1h30 mix (longest we’ve had yet) of dancehall tunes from his collection. Please enjoy!!!!

From dubstep to house and techno, Bristol-based record label Idle Hands has been shaping the sound of its city since 2009 – the year its founder, Chris Farrell, first released music by Peverelist, one of Bristol’s dubstep originators. 

The label has since gone on to garner international acclaim, featuring an impressive roster of artists such as Bruce, Shanti Celeste, Om Unit and Parris. Today, it continues to push sonic boundaries and provides open minded music-heads with twisted electronic albums from Bristol, tuned in by local artists like O$VMV$M and Rhythmic Theory.

For Carhartt WIP Radio Idle Hands mastermind Chris Farrell now has prepared a mix that mirrors the world of his label, blending older releases with more recent tunes by the likes of K-Lone, Strategy and Daisy Moon.
