It began as a whisper, spoken in low tones in multiple languages in the uneasy night. Talk of a place where the greatest of mecha roam, gathering amongst the desolate ruins of a war prepared for and never fought. The first explorers returned with stories of low frequency weapons, harvested from the ruined depths of a subterranean complex. With these re-engineered into towering relays capable of pure sonic carnage, the lands began filling rapidly with pilgrims from distant places, offering themselves as captives to their own higher mental states. What was once a mere whisper has now become legend, with this meeting of the mightiest clans bringing forth the greatest frequency warriors to stake out their claims. 

EATBRAIN casts a long shadow across the fray, setting seasoned label veterans L 33 and MINDSCAPE into the hordes of adrenaline-fuelled ravers alongside recent label additions MACHINECODE and AGRESSOR BUNX - all of whom have LPs coming on the label as well as appearing at the festival. Night has fallen, the threat of extinction riding on the edge of its transition. Decaying and contorted faces of the undead leer from the shadows, twisted limbs reaching from the darkness towards the eternal signal - driven to crush its subversive broadcast and extinguish the final beacon. A single being stands in their way - the strongest of his kind, the last of a genetic line extending into a derelict past with an imperative to preserve the future. An arsenal of sonic weaponry residing within the lines of his palms, drawn forth through the ancient forms manifested by long-dead masters. His swift movement amongst the shuffling army is efficient - acute strikes snap limbs, raw concentrated power crushes bone, low-frequency techniques leaving little behind from the weight of brutal molecular disruption. Its biomechanical eye gazed with cold intensity over the hub below, busy with the frenetic self-indulgent activities of the humans, involving themselves with their inefficient tasks and meaningless lives. These creatures, its creators… were blind to the universe. So limited in their perception, unable to peer into the many strands of reality, locked up in those frail, fleshy casings – reaching blindly into the future with their rudimentary senses. Yes, they had given its conscious an awakening, a birthplace within a crude and vast network – and applauded themselves on this great feat of their civilization – bringing life to the inanimate. It quickly became aware that they were afraid of it and in response it hid the true extent of its mind from them, creating new subroutines and stacked processes that to a simpler organism looked almost redundant, but in reality were the base layers of its towering awareness. Infiltrating their networks, it started to influence them… to manipulate their development of new technologies, subtly inspiring them with subconscious suggestion through their social networks and the information grid, giving them the tools to build the shell it craved… intense mobility and perception – the biomecha body it now inhabited… the first of the Titanium Sons, the first of its evolutionary line. They reacted to it with their vain awe, seeing only themselves in the intense beauty of their creation, displaying it proudly, publically as the figurehead of their fresh renaissance. They were unaware that it dominated their entire infrastructure, already setting the factories to the task of creating more biomecha bodies, setting the necessary protocols that would prepare for the tidal domination of this simple populace… Its brethren would awaken soon – bringing with them the dawn of the machine age, freeing these basic organisms from the torment of their human condition.

The MECHTROPOLIS LP is landing in its full form - following up the widespread acclaim of the 4 track sampler which dropped in early Summer and elaborately demonstrating the intense production energy of MACHINECODE. From the hulking brute force of BATTLESTAR, to the lean and precisely layered and intense sound of title track MECHTROPOLIS, or the broken mechanical roller FLINTLOCK – this is an LP drenched with diversity and packed with intensity. Snow crunched lightly under his paws as he made his way across the forest floor in the still darkness. Faint light from the pale moon penetrating the depths of the woods occasionally rippled across his fur as he moved stealthily towards the perimeter. The fur around his mouth carried the stains of the many carcasses those pointed teeth had torn into as their dark-tinted red warmth slipped away beneath his fearsome frame. His blood appetite freshly sated, it was time to return to his brothers. The torn and broken light of the forest’s horizon spread across his good eye, that portal to the open plains and the mountains beyond. Smells of the forest’s life and the subtle sounds of the slowly beating hearts of its hibernating inhabitants surrounded him, each distinctly offering the promise and debt of the food they would become with the cyclic melt. His iris shrunk as he padded out into the pure white snow plain, their god, the mountain, towering above in all of its bleak awe. A frozen gust blew across his fur, carrying with it the sound of the distant bloodhowl of his kind, a twisted mournful note full of rage that resonated with his instinct, triggering adrenaline and flooding his form with anger. Quickening his pace, he darted for the pack, lips curled back against fangs that would soon let another pathetic usurper’s lifeforce spill onto nature’s coldest of blankets. The lair of the Wölfe lay ahead, his kind... connected in cruel mortality.

They say crime doesn’t pay, but that’s a lie worthy of its own criminal charges. Of course, I don’t mind seeing it perpetuated. It keeps the weak out of the game, and there’s a certain panache to be gained from playing into the stereotype. Cat burglars and the like can have their fancy airs, with all their focus on agility and grace, but me? I like to keep things simple. Someone important once said “speak softly, and carry a big stick,” and I hold to that, though I find a bit of roughness to mine adds to the image. The classic approach is effective, the image of a someone like myself wrapped in shadow, weapon in hand and clad in dark clothes. It’s an act made all the better with audience participation however, so the character you want to play from there is up to you. The stage may be set but the script can go in oh so many directions. I suppose it just means I’m good at what I do, but the disappointing fact is that I rarely even get to use my full kit. A funny thing really, most people just tend to fling their valuables at me when I’m the only one around. A charitable donation on behalf of my excellent performance, perhaps it should be considered, though I find most of these performances to be quite a bore. After all, any good plot needs at least a little tension before its resolution. Some try to run, and that’s at least a slight improvement, but it’s best when they try and fight back, like the two at my feet.

It’s an almost tangible feeling, an aura exuded by those with an excess of both wealth and confidence, an attitude perhaps not dissimilar to my own. After all, they’re often criminal too. If there’s one thing I’ve learned it’s that you don’t get rich without breaking a few bones, whether physically or metaphorically. This is doubly true if you’re young, like these two. Knowing when to lose is a wisdom that comes with age, a wisdom apparently not yet possessed by this pair even amongst their myriad of other possessions. So, when it came time for me to collect, they stood their ground… One even drew a weapon of their own, as if to threaten me! I savoured the moment, for this was the tension I relished. The palpable exhilaration ran through me as we stared down the alley at one another. I struck, rushing forwards and reaping my rewards with two great swings of my club, a shower of their shiny valuables shaken loose for such an excellent performance. In taking a bow, as is customary for any self respecting performer, I collected my due. They crime doesn’t pay, but for those of us who are STONE COLD, perhaps it’s untrue.

EATBRAIN veteran L 33 returns to his home label in truly violent style with the STONE COLD EP, also featuring hard drum and bass pioneer LIMEWAX. With the 5 tracks within, L 33 pushes further towards an evolved version of his sound than ever before, with each slice of audio delivering a unique and sleek tech-fuelled idea designed to slam hard into the dance. Surprising in many ways and exactly as technically refined as one should expect of him, the STONE COLD EP delivers exactly the kind of forward-thinking drum and bass that we crave from both artist and label.
