Nigerian singer, Lobi has waited a long time for this moment, and he’s ready to take it. After years of ruminating on the viability of his sound in a Nigerian market, the multi-hyphenate who wrote and produced his debut EP, Freemotion, is now more than ever confident of what he brings to Nigeria’s ever-evolving soundscape. “I’ve been making music for a long time now, but this is a proper introduction to my sound,” he explains. “This EP is a key to help unlock new worlds and ideas.”
Throughout Freemotion, Lobi, born Olaoluwa David Adebayo, meditates on the naked vulnerability of falling in love or lust while remaining reflective on his experience as a creative trying to make a statement. Drawing influences from R&B, Afrobeats and Soul, his silky, sinuous vocals explore familiar emotions and ignite an assured debut EP.

1. Higher
Lobi delicately unfurls the EP’s narrative with feather-light falsetto on the opening track, Higher, as he reflects on a musical journey bolstered by a family that saw his vision from the beginning. “Higher evokes a feeling of nostalgia for me,” he says. “It’s a trip down memory lane, talking about how music started for me and realizing that it’s all I can and want to do.”

2. Diva (feat. Tochi Uguru)
Weaving subtle yet assertive vocals with an airy self-produced R&B bounce sound, Lobi employs Tochi Uguru in creating Diva, a song he describes as a “feel-good jam for the gal dem.”

3. Roses
Originally recorded as an acoustic demo for social media, Roses served as Lobi’s introduction to the world and the EP’s lead single. Wrapping his emotions in deftly-crafted melodies, he is vulnerable and passionate as he offers up an intoxicating atmosphere of longing. Capturing the overly familiar feeling of romance as emotions swing between infatuation and love, Roses might be Lobi’s official induction into a pantheon of brooding R&B loverboys.

4. The City (feat. Afiaxsiody)
“If Abuja was a beat, this is what it’d sound like,” Lobi says when describing the inspiration behind The City, his ode to Nigeria’s capital, Abuja. Unlike his other grand declarations of love, but still rooted in otherworldly melodies, The City feels like a sonic snapshot of Abuja, set somewhere between the breezy drive after a long night out and the hangover of the morning after.

5. Satisfy
On Satisfy, Lobi dives head-first into the inescapable mid-tempo Afropop sound that has quickly infiltrated social media and inspired countless challenges. Skating through this new musical territory with ease, Lobi’s arresting vocals seamlessly float over the dreamy beat as he explores the feeling of going after a newfound love interest.

6. No Pressure
No Pressure has all the markings of a memorable closer, complete with a voice note from Lobi’s mum — it’s the 21st century, after all, and voice notes are album essentials at this point. Accepting uncertainty and basking in his journey so far, Lobi sounds self-assured and confident that this moment is only the beginning. Even though No Pressure is available for all of us to listen to, this feels like a song Lobi made just for Lobi.

He credits PARTYNEXTDOOR, Ty Dolla $ign, Tay Iwar and Wande Coal as his early influences. When it comes to production, he admires the likes of Timbaland, Pharell Williams, Dr. Dre , Kanye West, and Sarz.
