PP INSTORE SESSION # 89 (LOBSTER THEREMIN CREW)

With his relaxed energy, the Australian András walks in the store on a quiet Saturday. He is pretty late, because he had a good one just a few hours before, playing at De School until the early hours. But all good, he glides through the store, picking out a variety of records of his interest. 

András is the stage name of Andrew Wilson, a Melbourne musician who’s earned acclaim for his unpredictable take on electronica. His soft focused abstractions cut a broad path through underground house, electronics, soundtrack and ambient music. His work is loosely based around drum machine rhythms and soft synthesis; smoothing over nature-machine and industrial-relaxation binaries and enjoying the slippage. His soft, fluent approach is reflected in this mix, which blends new and old music.

Cryogenically frozen. These are the words that come to mind when describing the somewhat out of reach biographical details of this week's potcast artist. The limited representational imagery and social fodder to help enhance the blur of D. Tiffany might be due to your connection speeds. You see, Sophie is only available via Dial-up, so as a fan, you are going to have to be patient. You might have to wait for the post to drop you her latest song to you, you might have to tie your shoes and put on a jacket to understand her live-set, and you might need to work up the courage to approach her to see if she is nice or not. Why? Who knows. Could it be the somewhat cult-y behavior of her Vancouver associations to the likes of Pacific Rhythm? I feel like the answers lay in the music. The answers also lay in the hazy memory of the raves past her songs often transport you to. I mean, I wouldn't be surprised if there was a trunk selling D. Tiffany tapes outside of this Saturday's show in San Francisco at OMG featuring our buddies Detach and Sepehr. It's not so hidden a message Sophie leaves in the cracks of her dusty breaks samples and massage chair bass-lines. If it was good enough then, it is good enough now. The music can and could always transport you. The bodies dancing can and could always ground you, regardless of the buzzing device in your pocket and/or the laptop in your canvas tote bag. Fetishistic? Certainly. Naive? Only enough to keep life mysterious and to never get too old to stop throwing shapes. Surely all the moniker hopping and ego-vading of D. Tiffany leaves questions unanswered, but go digging for records and tell me you're gonna find more than unplugged fax lines of information on 90 percent of the artists in those dusty bins. What makes you so important? Just put the needle to the record or go find answers IRL:

After just 6 months since first seeing Big Yawn perform, we are thrilled to welcome them to the Research family. A compelling prelude to their debut album "No!" due out in late 2019.

Over six years the Melbourne-based group has evolved, with members of the band running various releases through label and collective Fallopian Tunes. As of 2019, Big Yawn had become a four-member music group, motivated by a history of studio production, prolific collaboration and quality hangout time.

The groups freshest effort 'Skin Rat/Thomas' captures the band performing live in the studio, and it's typical Big Yawn: fat and punchy low-end bass; drums and live drum processing; delay fx samples; thick syrupy synths. 'Skin Rat' is a hyperbolically dubbed out, tongue in cheek, magnetic blend of UK garage, footwork and breaks. And 'Thomas' takes cues from a slightly damaged post-punk sound, amplifying a brittle and sinister type of atomic porn-funk.

Limited to 200 copies. Hand numbered and housed in a screen-printed sleeve, artwork by Julian Hocking.

The mix contains records I’ve been picking up in the last couple of months that offered me some kind of escapism to the nightlife I’ve been missing so much.”
