After many months of closure, fate smiled upon us this past New Year’s when Paquita Gordon (Italian vinyl-cognoscente and Terraforma resident) paid us a visit to dust off the cobwebs at Horoom. An avid explorer, in her travels as much as her bringing together of like-minded musicians for experimentations in sound, there’s a freedom in her craft. For this, the last hour of her set, she channels this libertine energy with the type of fun, high-octane amalgam of sounds she’s come to be known for. Next up in the Bassiani series comes British talent Andy Luff. With London’s growing commercialisation and NIMBY-style aversion to creative pursuits, it’s a mark of great mettle to have carved out a flourishing space on its turf, but Andy and his crew has exactly succeeded in doing this. Their bootleg and off-the-cuff raves began as a guestlist only set up, bringing together friends and their friends for events where the DJs and quality soundsystems took centre stage. And it all seems to have struck the right chord: growing slowly but steadily, with Andy now living in Amsterdam, he has taken picnics signature sound to the Dutch capital where the events are flourishing, now in its second decade and with a long-standing collaboration with London superclub Fabric and Amsterdams uniquely intimate Bret, their format is something much needed in keeping the European hotspots raving into the coming years. Picnic is still much focused on throwing some of the best parties in town, and now putting out records under their homonymous label. The imprint and Andy’s benchmark, an ice-cool mix of progressive house, electro and trance, perky beats with a confident bent, unpretentious sounds for a fun night’s dancing. Sometimes it’s really that simple. On the 7th of March, Andy brought a taste of his sound to Tbilisi with a banger set at Horoom and this one’s a live recording from the night. Andy fuses retro synthwork and wobbly percussions to fun effect. Misty-eyed melodies and infectious bass lines from this eclectic supplier of good times out are ever present in this recording. A scintillating first appearance and hopefully the first of many.

From the early days in the legendary KCC crew and his influential work as half of The Advent, to decades of solo output under his own name, Colin McBean has never strayed from his roots. With releases on Rekids, Moods ‘n’ Grooves, Defected, and his own long-running Phoenix G imprint, his raw, bass-heavy electronic-tech-funk sound has moved floors and minds all over the world.

Now, for one of his rare mixtape appearances, we’re honored to share this special vinyl-only piece from his archive.

Recorded on two Technics 1210's and a Rane MP2015 mixer and mixed down to CD with added weight, the mix had been sleeping for years until Mr. G pressed play and surprised even himself. It’s meditative, deep, and packed with the personality you only get when the machines are running hot. It captures the raw energy, honesty, and unmistakable feel that only Mr. G can deliver: just pure groove, and even a cheeky cable cut halfway through that adds to the charm.

It’s not often he shares this side, so we’re grateful he let us dig it out. For us, it’s a perfect snapshot of where he comes from and what he still brings to the table today. A true original.
