Glasgow producer Jai Dee debuts on 1Ø Pills Mate following a string of hot airwave teasers on DJ Haus’ Unknown To Unknown Rinse FM show and Tim & Barry TV’s NTS show. 

Kicking us off is an emotional cut of happycore; brimming with dense keys, hardcore aesthetics and sweaty hug energy, and this mood pours into ‘Free Falling Into Darkness’ as the warehouse rave feel explodes in a cloud of acid smiley’s and breakbeats.

Stepping out of the darkness and into the light, ‘Beyond Crystal Rain’ quite literally sounds like thousands of gems smashing into the ground below; it’s ethereal synth patterns and otherworldly textures providing a sonic outer-body experience. This transcendence continues on the 140 mix of ‘Inner Wall Of The Oort Cloud’; uplifting atmospherics and heart-string tugging vocal samples creating a vibe that’s both dreamy and tense.

The original mix steps firmly on the accelerator as we venture into 160 territory, before ‘Dystopian Chaos’ bows out with a psychedelic cut of beatless scoring; a spellbinding journey though the rainbow time warp that’s as colourful and inspired as you can imagine.

Pépé Elle, a young producer from Paris has been making some serious waves of late, both through his work as label boss at Aurore 404, it’s sub-label 3 Feet Deep Records and his own hard to pigeonhole productions, influenced from various corners of the world. Now the French DJ & producer further dissects the outer reaches of UKG, loaded with dutty rhythms, playful leads and atmospheric backdrops on Cheeky Music Group. 

Opening track ‘Hype Dope’ is a skippy exploration of colourful leads and sleekly-pressed rhythms; lyrics ‘break the turntable and flip’ embody a smile before gun-fingers reach for the air. The low-slung and weighty vibe of ‘Unexcusable’ and the acidic tinged ‘CMS We Meet Again’ show Pépé’s ability to connect various sounds while maintaining a continuity across his deep sonic palette. 

On the flip ‘Thump’ is a minimal garage gem; the type of track that would work perfectly when warming up a crowd or as a bridge between murkier UK sounds. ‘Long Swelling Wave’ is a straight up dance-floor destroyer, combining heavyweight bass and itchy beats, forming a sea of frenetic energy as day turns to night.

Berlin producer, Random Alias, returns with a post-lockdown reflection that includes dance-floor fillers and sonic journeys in electro, techno and acid.

BOM002 explores the dichotomy of human existence that is monotonous conformity and search for freedom. This latest release from Random Alias, makes you want to move just as much as take a moment for reflection. With each track we’re presented with the iconic red pill/blue pill concept: Remain slaves to the control and automation of modern society? Or strive for freedom as we define it ourselves?

Automat opens side A with its smouldering bassline that at times becomes warped as the 5 minutes unfold. A dreamy synth line enters like a fragmented, existential thought. The kind that wakes you up in the dead of night or while you’re in the middle of a shower. The remix from iconic electro producer, DJ Overdose, takes the original to a darker place with a slower, aggressive synth. It’s a ‘Freakfest’ as Overdose defines it.

Side B starts with Nu Funk and its representation of simple efficiency. The track keeps it tight while retaining the free-spiritedness of funk. Its warm sounds take a more old school approach and are a call to retain an easier life free from fame, money and power to the single individual. While Night Drive closes the release with a rolling bass and pads that drive a progressive sound. At its core, the record takes the listener on a trip exploring sounds and styles and the timeless notion that change is the outcome of reflection.
