Following up on the success of his two recently released singles 'Al Bundy' and 'Thoughts' which were both added to huge Spotify editorial playlists such as New Music Friday, Our Generation and Peach - Local Boy returns with his sophomore EP Local Boy Helps Himself. 

The EP is the culmination of lessons learned along Local Boy's career thus far with tracks touching on bedroom pop, hip-hop and indie rock all filtered through the Irish producer's singular sonic sensibility. 

Delivering a message through his danceable and uplifting sound, several tracks on the EP center around a critique of the toxic positivity culture that can taint online self-help communities and make us feel guilty for our negative emotions. 

"I really wanted to get a cohesive message across with this body of work while still retaining the playful energy of my earlier releases," says Local Boy 

"Since the pandemic has began so many of us have turned to online self help outlets to try weather the storm we've found ourselves in, and so much of that content serves no purpose other than to uphold the neoliberal orthodoxy that our pain is a personal failing and not indicative of wider problems in society." 

"I'm a huge fan of the writing of the late Mark Fisher who tackled a lot of these issues in his literature and I wanted to wrap these ideas up in a danceable, bedroom-pop package."

Building off the success of the darkly witty single ‘Reality’ released earlier this year, Local Boy returns with the optimistic summer anthem ‘Milkshake Pilltaste’. The track is a bouncy blend of anthemic hooks, Irish-hip hop verses and smooth bedroom pop guitars as the Dublin artist waxes lyrical about the power of the summer sun to pull us through our darkest times. 

Characteristically of Local Boy, the track is an idiosyncratic mix of his varied influences - funk drums underpin bedroom pop guitar chords as Local Boy shifts between his theatrically soulful vocals on the chorus and his Irish hip-hop indebted percussive flow on the verse. In the song’s pre-chorus, Local Boy name checks a local influence he’s particularly fond of, former Republic of Loose frontman Mik Pyro. 

“This track is the start of an exciting period of projects and releases for me, so I wanted to kick things off on a fun and optimistic note,” says Local Boy. 

“The themes get heavier on a lot of my new music so I wanted to remind myself that sometimes getting out in the sun and breathing fresh air can be so important for giving us a fresh perspective when times are hard.”

Milkshake Pilltaste

Following on from the success of ‘Milkshake Pilltaste’ earlier this month, Local Boy keeps the summer vibes coming with ‘Crazy Stupid Love’, a singalong anthem celebrating kindness, friendship and solidarity in the face of economic uncertainty. The sophomore single from Local Boy’s upcoming album - ‘Crazy Stupid Love’ is a thrilling amalgamation of the Dublin artists diverse sphere of influence drawing on west coast hip-hop melody, booming drum loops and psychedelic guitar riffs. 

The tracks singalong hook and rapped verses are an ode to the necessity of unity and solidarity amongst ordinary people in the face of an economic system that sacrifices the comfort and opportunity of the many to serve the interests and greed of the few. 

“It felt necessary to address this topic on the album,” says Local Boy. “It's incredibly difficult for the majority of young people to get on the property ladder or even secure a comfortable standard of living at the moment. I wanted the lyrics on this track to serve as a reminder not to buy in to the divisive narratives right-wing media often pushes in the face of economic uncertainty.” 

“The only course of action is to double down on solidarity amongst everyday people in the face of an economic system built to serve the interests of a small group of billionaires.” 

“I was also a bit wary of beating the listener over the head with the message,” Local Boy continues. “I think however I succeeded in making a track that works as a standalone pop single while also carrying a little bit of weight beneath the singalong hooks and catchy  instrumentation.”
