Never a label to be pigeonholed, Diffrent Music returns with its first full downtempo release courtesy of label stalwarts Fearful and Mtwn.

Having touched on UK techno, garage and ambient with his expansive 2017 album 'Interference', London producer Fearful joins forces with the Belgian duo for four tracks further exploring these concepts.

From the deconstructed rave of opener 'Part 2', through sultry midnight viber 'Unknown', the sub-aquatic soundscape of 'Depths', right through to the eerie, jittering last track 'Verbunden', it's an EP that dives headfirst into that grey area of nostalgia-flecked progression once dubbed the hardcore continuum — and then pushes far beyond.

A milestone release coming in Diffrent's celebratory 10th year, 'Collisions' not only continues the ongoing stories of Fearful and Mtwn, but opens a new chapter in the chronicles of the South London imprint.

Jaskin & Uneven return to none60 to deliver another proverbial letter bomb! When I first played these I had to don one of those suits like in The Hurt Locker.... quite flattering on my figure I have to say!

"Ashes" sounds like it could be taken from the soundtrack of a sequel to Terminator 2: Judgement Day that doesn't exist in our timeline ( I still haven't forgiven you "Rise of The Machines") with its bendy synths and machine-like punchy bassline! Definitely gets a thumbs up from me!

If you need a time out from all that terminating then come with me if you want to chill - I'll stop now! "Kaleidoscope" is one for all of us that love a bit of Acidic 170 squelchy goodness which is about 17 of us I believe? Hopefully Resident Advisor or someone can do a census so history can see that it didn't all stop in 1992!

D. Tellus - Knocklofty [OUT NOW]

Diffrent Music preps two juxtaposing cuts from label stalwart Fearful in ‘FKD’ / ‘XINF’.

Summing up 2020 in name and sound — though actually produced prior to the current crisis — ’FKD’ brings darkness and danger via urgent beat shifts and shadowy tech contortions. A bouncy step keeps things moving, but this one is all about that distorted b-line tearing through the mix.

‘XINF’ couldn’t be more of a contrast. Playful percussive rolls fill an otherwise sparse beat, while huge swells of low-end and fizzing synth tones combine into an epic, uplifting cerebral crescendo. A classical masterpiece rewired for a hopeful future.

Both tracks hint at old school Diffrent vibes, but applied from a fresh perspective not heard before on the label. Fearful’s ‘FKD’ / ‘XINF’ is out Friday 27th November on digital and limited edition 10” vinyl.
