Locked Concept Podcast Vol. 97

Locked Concept's second drop of 2023 sees a return of Tellus to our Horizons release series.

The Horizons series looks to move away from the label's drum and bass roots, with the Loops EP as no exception. The four tracks range between 130 - 140 bpm and draw influence from across the spectrum of electronic music while still maintaining a signature Tellus sound.

It's not entirely fair to give Tellus full credit on this EP, as each track was started during a music production class at the high school he teaches at. Whether it was suggestions on which samples to use, recommendations on certain songs to draw influence from, input on the cover art, or simply the patience to sit through a tutorial on some component of producing, numerous high school students have had some form of influence or input on the creation of this four track EP.

Loops EP

D. Tellus - Moving On [OUT NOW]

Hailing from Johannesburg, South Africa, Sol Pillars makes his debut on Locked Concept's main catalogue. Two tracks are presented in this EP - the first, Sensations, featuring the vocals of Lara, blends a combination of dark harmony, a techy aesthetic, and dancefloor movement. The flipside, Together, stomps along with with textured basses and a developing melody that rides the line of dancefloor and headphone music.

LCKDPY011 - Uneven Guest Mix

After a couple of deeper releases on Locked Concept, Lockjaw returns to release a 2-track EP with a heavier tilt for LCKD033. The B-side, "Shimmer", rolls out with stepping drums and an abrasive bassline, while the A-side, "Your Love", paints a more melodic picture with vocal snippets before unveiling textured and evolving basses.

Hailing from Poznan, Poland and leading the legendary DrumObsession crew, Locked Concept welcomes Alegria for his debut on the label.

Alegria was first approached for a release on Locked Concept following his debut EP - ’Petrograd’ on Akuratyde's Modern Conveniences. Although this wasn't the first time Lockjaw and Tellus had heard of Alegria, with the two label co-founders coincidentally seeing him DJ, supporting Kid Drama at one of the DrumObsession events in Poznan, way back in 2015.

Fast forward to 2024, Alegria delivers his forward-thinking ’Aurora Borealis’ EP. With different Poznan-based artists collaborating on three of the four tracks, the release stands as a sonically diverse contribution to the Locked Concept catalogue.

The title track - a joint effort with Tellus - kicked the entire effort off in the blissed out Autonomic style both artists love. Ewski, who used to be part of a legendary dubstep collective (Dungeon Beats), also found common ground with Alegria on ’The Healer’, which is the smoothest, and most delicate piece on the EP. ’Terra Incognita’ with Istota, who used to run a short-lived albeit stellar experimental drum & bass label Black Crane, is a 130 bpm bass-driven electro / breakbeat hybrid. Finally Voitek Noir joins Alegria on ’Englishman’ in a beautiful 80s-inspired Autonomic storytelling piece for the patient listener (wait for that second drop!).

They say good things come to those who wait and we’re glad Alegria and his friends took the time in crafting this EP.

Locked Concept presents 'Edge of the Earth' by Tellus, the sixth installment in the label's Periphery release series. In this EP Tellus explores the deeper end of the 170 bpm spectrum, bringing us four tracks that draw on emotions of change and our move into an unknown tomorrow.

Locked Concept is a label co-founded by drum and bass artist Lockjaw and close friends. It is a platform to enable creative control and ensure a high quality marriage of visual and auditory art forms.

Locked Concept explores the deeper side of music with a focus on "listening" music over the ability to make one dance. On the visual side of things, the label features local visual artists who focus on a variety of different mediums to convey their feelings about the music featured on the label.
