This piece forms part of a set called "Pictures at a War Museum". A poem written by a soviet author called Konstantin Simonov can be heard at the beginning of the piece, whilst the audio heard through out is recordings inspired by the film itself. These words can almost be seen in the background of the imagery.

Enemy At The Gates

This piece also forms part of the Pictures At A War Museum. This composition is to connote the idea of remembrance, which is also suggest in the art work.

Saving Private Ryan

This piece is the first song I composed for the portfolio. The first part is to introduce the idea of story being about forbidden love, loss and magic. The second part is to show the sinister side of the story. Over the time of composing I can see how much I have developed as a composer from listening to this track and the others. 

Overture: Gentlemen's Agreement

For my final year portfolio in composition I decided to do a film music/theatre music themed portfolio based upon a book called The Night Circus. I picked the book apart and rewrote parts of it to fit with what I wanted and I am still in the process of making a soundtrack for it. This piece is to denote the feelings of the character Isobel when she is told by the man she loves that he is in fact in love with someone else.

Isobel

This piece is part of The Night Circus portfolio that I am working on. It is written to denote the opening act of a circus, which is not meant to be there average traditional circus. The circus incorporates many different cultures, which I wanted to reflect in the music with the use of the different instruments and feels. This is meant to be a dance piece for belly dancers, snake charmers and fire eaters; alongside other acts. This piece is very percussion driven, which is very different from the other music I have written. The idea is that it slowly builds up then reaches a climax to then come down again as all the acts leave the stage. There are sections which work in conjunction with the story line in the book, such as the part where there is 12 beats on the drums, which is to connote the fire eaters lighting the bonfire with fire arrows when the clock strikes at midnight.

Inception

This one was written for one of the acts of the circus; the Japanese contortionist. This piece was a challenge to compose as I am not familiar with Japanese music so I did a bit of research into it. I used two different Japanese scales which were Yo and Insen, one of which was a pentatonic scale. I used the pizzicato violas to push the Japanese theme, but kept legato strings in the back ground to connote the contortionists slow movements. Over all this isn't my favourite composition out of the portfolio, but I think that this is a good representation of Japanese themed music for a contortionist.

Tsuiko

This was the last composition composed for my final portfolio. Its a little messy with the mixing and most definitely has room for improvement, but I like it :P. It also features a fugue, which I have never written before. This is the last piece of the story where Celia finds out that to win the competition one must die, so she runs to find Marco as shes knows hell do something stupid. The rest of the music then represents her finding Marco in an agreement with another character to kill him and she runs in the way last minute killing herself. 

Ghosts

This is the first composition to be played in concert by professional musicians. It was amazing to hear it come to life as opposed to the Sibelius sounds!! I was heavily influenced by landscapes for this piece! 

Autunno Horn Trio

I wrote this piece for two short clips of the recent rendition of The Woman in Black. It is better appreciated with the video clip behind, but unfortunately you can not upload videos on here :( The first part of the track is for the opening scene of the film and the second part is for a particularly freaky part in the film, but again it is appreciated more with the visuals.

"Guided"

This song was written as generic background music for a 3rd year media students documentary, which was about a little girl with autism whose mum had cancer. It is to be a children's programme so the music needed to be light and fun. I used a ukulele as the main instrument, hence the name Ukuleyla.
