This song is part of the Ferry Sessions; short tracks composed in the front seat of my car, or the passenger lounge on the Skeena Queen during my weekly ferry ride into town.  The trip is 35 minutes each way, so, the bulk of the tracks' main themes, phrases, loops, and arrangements are laid down in about an hour, with a wee bit of tinkering when I get back home. 

Contrary to my regular M.O. there are no vintage synths here, just an old MacBook with Garageband, a Microkorg, and a no-name MIDI controller.

A little ditty inspired by Commodore 64 & Sega Genesis games. ( ToeJam & Earl anyone? ) I recently discovered that several of my keyboards actually contain the same (or very similar)vintage chip-sets as those consoles and can be programmed to produce the same classic sounds. Cool.

This is a "live" jam recorded in one take using a Volca Bass passed through an EH Bass Micro Synthesizer and a $10 analogue delay pedal as the lead. Baseline courtesy of the Juno-6 sync'd to a TR-707. I threw in a couple random samples to spice things up a bit. MIDI be damned!

Couldn't resist uploading this. It's a rap version of Dr. Seuss' To Think That I Saw It On Mulberry Street that was part of my little sister's school project. It's pretty bad but we had a lot of fun making it. If I recall correctly we had a Dr.Rhythm drum machine, a Fostex 4-track and a bunch of toy instruments. Oh yeah, listen for my trumpet solo!

Thanks to Craig Tiessen for the vocals and my sister Elizabeth for help with sound effects and yelling.

Mulberry Rap

Mulberry Rap - Featuring Craig Tiessen

Live jam, no computer sequencers or MIDI, just a JUNO-6 arpeggiator sync'd to a TR-707 drum pattern with some improvised pads etc. on an HS-10 (Alpha Juno-1). The "found audio" is taken from the US Coast Guard VHF radio recordings of the 2010 sinking of the fishing vessel Northern Belle. It was layered over the "live" recording in Audacity.

The TR-707 is triggering the Juno-6 arpeggiator while I control the filter with a CV foot pedal. Melody lines are improvised live on the Juno-106 and SH-1000. 

Also trying out the analog string ensemble on my new Technics SX-K350.

The 1-bar components were composed while sitting on ferry boats. The final track was assembled while sitting on the pot.

This is really just a sketch and has not be mixed, mastered, or even EQ'd. Nonetheless, I hope you hear something you like.

Captain Sausage Fingers

Another late-night synth jam, recorded dry and archived here.

This is a little chord sequence I was banging out on the piano for the last few days. It began to sound like it could be a good synth-pop tune so I put together a very rough cut so I wouldn't lose the idea. I'll go back and rework it a bit and it may end up on my next album.

NOTES No.5 came about one rainy Sunday afternoon while I was testing out a newly acquired Novation Bass Station. I sequenced a simple baseline on the JUNO-106 and then started experimenting with lead sounds. I added 808 drum samples from a Roland JV-35, started playing chords with cheesy choir samples and before long I had the makings of a little synth-pop ditty.

Yet another orphan track from the "NOTES - Sketches from the ROBOT Labs" series. Like it's fellows this is a work in progress, a quick sketch to get some ideas down so I can come back to them later if I feel so inspired. Constructive criticism  is appreciated and encouraged.

This track was sequenced using an antique copy of Cakewalk Pro from 1991 running on an equally ancient Windows 95 PC. The synthesizers and drum machines were all hardware, mostly vintage and include the following:
