Kate inspired many of the songs that I wrote during the years we were together, encouraging and supporting me to play live. Kate herself was a natural gifted singer, and would bring classes to a close at the end of savasana with her gentle singing.

The Story of “Balinese Monkeys”

Kate stayed in Bali for three weeks in February 2016 to attend a yoga course. The network and Wi-Fi signals were too bad to have much voice contact, but Kate sent me lots of messages and facebook posts describing what it was like. As well as selfies to blow me the occasional kiss!

The first line in the song is lifted directly word-for-word from one of those messages, written to me and my two children who she treated with such love and devotion.

The various lines about the weather, rice fields, and geckos waking her up are all taken from the messages she sent to me during that time. I didn’t really need to employ much artistic licence at all.

The song came together so unusually quickly for me, it feels now as if Kate inadvertently wrote it herself, and I simply put music and melody to it. It certainly would never have existed without Kate.

I would often end a set with this song and get everyone to sing along, as it lends itself to so well: a fitting feature of the song given Kate’s community spirit.

The line “Flowers rise, they follow you” describes how she made me feel: enchanted and drawn to her irresistible energy, just as flowers turn and follow the sun.

This version was recorded specifically for her service.
