"While being in the midst of transition, it is almost impossible to recognize that transition itself"

First of all, please listen to the entire piece. It's 35 minutes of unremarkable sound that goes on and on. You will probably find some repose there, or perhaps you will subconsciously listen to this sound as you do your housework or desk job. But many of you probably didn't notice a certain change in the sound that took place during those 35 minutes.

After listening to the beginning for a bit, I want you to skip ahead and listen to the last five minutes or so. You will realize for the first time that the sound you have just listened to has actually changed over time without you knowing it.

What I wanted to emphasize here is that "Only by setting a certain starting point and an ending point can we clearly recognize the transition of time itself". Although concepts of time and seasons such as "Morning" and "Winter" exist, they are merely concepts that humans have assigned to themselves for the convenience of their lives, and they are endpoints from the perspective of counter-conceptual starting point such as "Night" and "Autumn". For example, when we look at images taken 30 years ago, we can clearly recognize that time has definitely passed. It is precisely because there is a starting point of "30 years ago" and an ending point of "Today" that we can recognize the passage of time itself. And there should not be many opportunities to recognize this clearly.

In these 35 minutes, you will realize once again "We are actually living under various conditions that are constantly and gradually changing". At the same time, I would like to present the importance of questioning various things that are now taken for granted.

Transition 1

Peter Kvidera is Minneapolis, US based artist Peter Kvidera, who has previously released albums on Aether Sound, as well as creating material for Triplicate Records and contributing a track for Jogging House’s ‘A Compilation For Oceana’ in 2021. After dedicating time in childhood making music with trumpet and guitar, Peter progressed into manipulating electronic sounds in high school and he has been doing it ever since. His work now is typically born through experimenting with new techniques, instruments and processes; throwing spaghetti at the wall to see what sticks.

For ‘Verism’, a liminal sleep sound became the hook, as a fuzzy form of minimalism sprawled across 9 hazy tracks. A simple loop-based approach was adopted, gathering sampled instruments and field recordings and funneling them through software utilities. Peter was interested in exploring the line between music and sound, questioning what makes a group of sounds take the step into becoming music versus an audio collage of gathered sounds. He experimented with manipulating the timbre of instruments and other audio, to explore the tipping points of whether their original source is still traceable.

It is Peter’s hope that this work of obscured sounds and textures falls just over the line, into musical territory.

Ekin Fil continues her quietly complex dream-pop oeuvre on Maps. For many years now, this Istanbul musician has been writing mysterious and haunting songs, rich in heavy-reverb effects and an introspective torpor. With each successive album, her songwriting has blossomed through broader instrumentation and more intricate melodic phrasing, though the somber atmospherics and ghostly manifestations remain a judicious constant. Minor-key, tear-stained notes of piano, organ, and guitar veer along elliptical orbits as a soft-whisper lilt of Ekin’s voice narrates more by emotive decree than by literary couplet. 

Maps addresses the distance and dislocation of the self from the bustling center of Istanbul, where Ekin FIl (neé Ekin Üzeltüzenci) had once called her home. Having spent her first winter on a relatively quiet island in the Sea of Marmara (while still in the greater metropolitan umbrella of Istanbul), Maps  is “lonely, different, kind of isolated,” according to Ekin, who also noted that the island had “too much silence around. There is no other choice but to concentrate, I guess.” Her poetics of silence on her previous recordings had been noted as an antidote or a dream capsule of sound in response to Istanbul’s cauldron of politics, culture, and philosophy that has been boiling almost since the beginning of civilization. Maps bends that maritime silence into wind-swept smudges that complement her already spacious compositions.  

The saddest songs of The Durutti Column excised of rhythm and those few plunges into sorrow by Harold Budd make for apt comparisons to Maps, in addition to the drone-on classics of Grouper, Slowdive, and Sarah Davachi.
