Severed Heads are one of the longest standing bands to have emerged from the Australian post-punk and experimental scene. They began in Sydney in 1979, and were an early outfit to incorporate elements of 'industrial' noise-generation, tape cutting & looping and electronic sound synthesis. As the project developed, song-structures and vocals were employed in a more-or-less recognizable mutant electro pop style. After many line-up changes featuring Gary Bradbury and psychedelic guitarist Simon Knuckey, Severed Heads became the solo vehicle for composer Tom Ellard. 
In 1983 they released a C-60 cassette called “Since The Accident” that grabbed the attention of Ink Records, a subsidiary of Virgin in the UK.  Ellard added a throwaway track at the last minute to fill out the cassette, not wanting to leave an unseemly gap on a C60 tape. This track, “Dead Eyes Opened” was catchy enough to get a lot of airplay on the main non-commercial radio station in Sydney. The band was asked to make this song into a 12” single. For this extended version, Tom Ellard and producer Patrick Gibson went to M Squared studio and passed the multitracked recordings through various EQ's and delays. “Dead Eyes Opened” features samples from a radio program narrated by Edgar Lustgarten, a crime journalist from England, referencing a double murder case that occurred in 1924. The rhythms are made by a TR-808 drum machine and an SH-1 synthesizer. A KORG PolySix was used for strings and additional atmospheric elements. The lead solo was a Casiotone run through an Octaver foot pedal. On the B-side are two solo compositions “Bullet” and “Mount” that Ellard recorded at Terse Tapes in 1982. 

All songs are remastered for vinyl by George Horn at Fantasy Studios in Berkeley. Housed in the original jacket featuring the iconic photograph of a girl with a painted face wrapped in some cloth by Juilee Pryor. Each copy includes a fold-out newsprint poster with a large photo of the band wearing Art Unit skull shirts on one side and liner notes and press clippings on the other. 30 years later Severed Heads are still paving the way for powerful, imaginative, and challenging music.

Boytronic is a synthpop group from Hamburg, Germany founded by by Holger Wobker and Peter Sawatzki in 1982. The duo began composing music as the soundtrack to sex shows on Hamburg’s famous “Mile of Sin”. Soon after, Holger started working in a local record shop where he played early Boytronic demos during his shifts. A representative from Mercury Records came to the shop, heard the songs and gave the band a contract. They would go to release many singles and two albums “The Working Model” in 1983 and “The Continental” in 1985. By 1986 the record company claimed rights to the band name and put together a completely different line­up fronted by Hayo Lewerentz. This new incarnation continued to record under the Boytronic name until the mid-­90's.

Influenced by Kraftwerk, The Human League, Visage and Depeche Mode, the band crafted their own brand of synthpop. Their first single “You” was released by Mercury Records in 1983 and became a Top 10 club hit in many European charts. Inspired by New Order’s “Bizarre Love Triangle”, the song in an openly gay love song, where the singer expresses his loneliness waiting the return of his adoration for another man. “Trigger Track” was released in 1984 as a B-­side of the second Boytronic single “Diamonds and Loving Arms”. It was originally planned as an A-side, but was declined by the record company. “Bryllyant” was originally released as a B­-side to the 86 remix of “You” on JDC Records, a label aimed at dance floors and club DJs. A Belgian DJ played the song at 33rpm and convinced the band to release this slower speed version in 1988. It became the band’s second most successful release and a hit across Europe. This EP features both the 1986
U.S Remix and 1988 33 1⁄3 Plus 8 Remix of “Bryllyant”, as well as the original 1983 Extended 12” version of “You” and a special edit of Trigger Track never before released on vinyl.

All songs have been remastered for vinyl by George Horn at Fantasy Studios. Each LP comes in an jacket featuring neon green spot gloss lettering based on the 1988 “Bryllyant” single, and includes an 8.5x11 glossy press photo with liner notes, credits and lyrics, designed by Eloise Leigh. “So what you hold in your hands now is a trip back to the rousing eighties in Germany, in the post punk era, when everybody wore awful clothes and painted their hair with crazy colours. Having made an undeniable contribution to the legacy of electronic music in Detroit over the last twenty years, Matthew Dear arrives at Planet E with a new alias, simply known as Brain. The latest in a legacy of Dear's influential techno projects including False, Jabberjaw and Audion, The World EP finds the veteran producer still moving ever-forward.

Originally debuting on Carl Craig’s acclaimed Detroit Love Vol.2 mix compilation in 2019, the introductory ‘Boss’ is a psychedelic tunnel that takes full advantage of Dear’s nous for detail, as a submissive vocal delivers a number of distinctive requests amid the lustrous texture of the Brain project, both hyper-detailed and deliciously minimal. This same sense of patience and space drives ‘Corrections’, a knotty, rolling masterpiece of digital distortion that unfolds into a valley of spacious breakbeats, before reconstructing itself back to visceral analogue pleasure.

Getting deeper still as the record progresses, ‘Rafe’ takes place in the hinterland between full-throttle rave ecstasy and unadulterated deeperness, as if gasping and exhaling with pleasure and relief. ‘Snake Head’ operates in an upper echelon of tempo that speaks for another variation of electro from Detroit’s community, collapsing into a trancelike passage of outright oddness. 

The World EP will be released in digital form initially during the lockdown period, with a 2x12" vinyl release to follow in September 2020 featuring the additional production, 'Tantricity'. Clocking in at 24mins, this understated epic offers a tumbling, occasionally indescribable journey through passage upon passage of Brain’s ultra-precise and unpredictable world, a euphoric and occasionally unsettling masterclass in suspense and release.
