Climamorphosis, a Contemporary Electro-Acoustic Musical Work - 2004
The composition "Climamorphosis" draws on a numerical data set of weather changes in the Bay of Fundy. These data values and algorithms were programmed and converted to music data using the PCM (Pulse Code Modulation) wav protocol. Each numerical parameter then creates a unique sound pattern which is fed into a Variphrase processor. The Variphrase processor can then slow down, speed up, pitch up, pitch down and digitally format the weather sample in real-time. The "Variphrase" technology, developed by Roland Corporation, is the latest for sampling in real time, and it is derived from MIDI time partitions. The modified sound then travels to the Roland JP-8080 where it is electronically modelled and enhanced by the artist. Notch filters, parametric filters, panning, arpeggio, and sine wave modulation are a few of the thousands of possibilities, not to mention the vocoder (a real-time voice effect modulator) to which the sound is being fed. Everything is connected via MIDI using RX channel routing.

Climamorphosis - Mauricio Duarte 2004

Show performed at Anna Leonowens gallery, Halifax NS. Sensor and light technology on space sculptures by Artist Mar Molano. Floor exhibition based on our relationship with electronics. Mauricio assisted in the design and circuitry, microcomputer, and concept for distance and movement sensors to be used with boxes that lit up. Mauricio also composed the soundtrack for the exhibition which was played in a loop.

The soundtrack consists of movement, chakras, and permits looping.

Son Latino has become, in less than two years, both, the preferred live ensemble for dancers of salsa and other Latin rhythms, and a favorite of Latin music aficionados in Halifax. The band’s growing repertoire is a mixture of traditional and more contemporary tunes from all over Latin America. Son Latino is a six piece band with a similar set up to a Cuban Septeto, but with a musicianship and versatility that makes it possible to venture into a variety of genres. 

Son Latino brings traditional Cuban music to the Halifax stage with a sound reminiscent of the Buena Vista Social Club project. The band broadens its scope performing classic Latin American songs and experimenting with a variety of dance rhythms like merengue, cha cha, and reggaeton and throwing into the mix more contemporary tracks. Guitar, bongo, congas, claves, maracas, bass, trumpet, keyboard and voices join in to engage the listener and make it almost impossible to sit still.

Mauricio Duarte (Keyboard) was born in Hong Kong to Colombian parents while his father was serving diplomatic services for Colombia. Growing up in a musical family Mauricio has been playing the piano since he was 4 years old, and is also an expert percussionist/turntablist.

He graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Music with concentration in Technology from Acadia University and has played in various Jazz, Ska, rock, Electronic, and Hip Hop bands. He has also composed music and sound effects for interactive media and video games.
