For this month's "Tribute Mix", we shift our focus on the Great White North, aka the Land of Maple Syrup, aka Canada. Being so closely tied with the U.S.A., demographically and culturally, Canada has produced some of the most sought-off records (Ron Richardson anyone?), and was once considered the one of the leaders of the Disco-Funk scene.

Walla P is one of Funk’s ambassadors, thanks to his expertly-curated selections, bridging Modern Funk with late 70's/early 80's Boogie-Disco-Funk . The Montreal native stands behind Voyage Funktastique, a global brand that encompasses a record label, a radio show and a monthly live event, since 2013. Through his sets, he shares his passion through classic cuts and rare grooves, as he journeys effortlessly from Boogie/Disco to Modern Funk, and everywhere in between. Over the last few years, he’s performed in cities from LA to NYC and Marseille to Madrid, sharing the stage with the likes of DâM-Funk, Kaytranada, Pomo, Onra, Peanut Butter Wolf & Breakbot, and playing festivals such as Lost Village, Hip Opsession, and many more across Quebec & Canada. 

Here’s what Walla P had to say about the mix.

“I recorded this mix during a thunderstorm, at my studio. I had in mind that it would be like a B2B set, 2 "older" records vs 2 "newer" records.  Definitely not club orientated this time but more mellow, street soul & atmospheric funk”

The Beacon (Seattle) and the legendary Orb from Circle of Fire/Soulshifters hosts a house dance class and open session every Wednesday.  It's always a treat to play for a room full of dancers!  The energy was such a vibe.  This mix is a combination of afro, atmospheric, and soulful house.  Enjoy!

2016 just saw another Legend pass away. Kashif Saleem, previously known as Michael Jones, was one of the most prolific producers in the 1980's, producing for acts such as Melba Moore, Evelyn Champagne King, Withney Houston, Howard Johnson and George Benson, just to name a few.

On a personal note, Kashif's music is the ultimate reason why I am the Dj that I aspire to be - the 1st time I heard "I Just Got To Have You (Lover Turn Me On) was one of the greatest musical discovery, if not the greatest, that I encountered - that Moog Bass, those guitar licks, that snare variation on the 8th, the arrangements, the lyrics. I was captivated. Forever. Today, I'm even more convinced that Kashif Changed My Life. Rest In Power Kashif Saleem.
