‘The Eysenck Suite I – Melancholic’ is the first instalment of a four part experimental aural jigsaw puzzle from the enigmatic Russian Linesman, who has become a somewhat cult figure over the past eleven years, crossing paths with mavericks such as James Holden, Max Cooper, Nathan Fake, Ryan Davis, Applescal and Laurent Garnier, along the way, via his imaginative transmissions from his secretive studio lair in Nottingham.

A musical diarist who deeply values his chosen form of expression as art inspired by his physical and emotional travels through life, he has released numerous singles, EPs and two studio albums. For the uninitiated to gain an insight into the workings of the Russian Linesman’s mind, his last album (‘Nostalgia Story’ 2013) was a sprawling thirty-seven-song flood of inspiration that was recorded live in one take, whereas ‘The Eysenck Suite I-IV’ is the result of four solid years of dedicated writing and numerous re-records.

The catalyst for this latest, bold musical project was located in a tattered old Psychology book by Hans Eysenck, unearthed from his parents’ loft. It contained an analysis of temperament theory and its roots in the ancient ideas of Hippocrates and Galen. Exploring these concepts and endeavouring to recreate them has shaped the project’s music and how it is presented. Galen had named four temperamental categories as being “Melancholic”, “Choleric”, “Sanguine” and “Phlegmatic”, and the esoteric Linesman’s compositions communicate his interpretation of each classification of Eysenck’s resulting model and the emotions they encompass, ordered and structured and revealed across four EPs.

Part one focuses on the Melancholic temperament that tends towards sadness and feeling low, resulting in a somewhat pessimistic view of the world. The name has been adopted as a synonym for sorrow, but comes from the Greek words for black bile. This first EP is intended as a soundtrack for times of sorrow, reminiscence and regret. But also for moments of withdrawal from over thinking everything, reducing anxiety, reflecting and triggering memory traces of happier times.

Although he use's James Holden's favourite software - Jeskola Buzz - the Russian Linesman writes all his music on acoustic guitar and piano, harking back to a past spent touring as an acoustic singer/songwriter playing folk music. This ethos has evolved into recording with vocals as well, before everything is heavily edited and drowned in electronic sounds.

“I find this method of writing allows me to find more curious melodies and give the songs an organic spine. I use lots of found sounds too, with the intention of recreating feelings and settings for my stories. Some of the finished songs still contain snippets of the vocals, guitars or pianos, while others will be fully enclosed in a digital sarcophagus.” – Russian Linesman

‘The Eysenck Suite II – Choleric’ is the next instalment of this experimental aural jigsaw puzzle and is focused on the Russian Linesman’s musical interpretation of the choleric temperament that is characterised by an anxious and sometimes aggressive temper, resulting in restless behaviour that eventually gives way to periods of impulsive and optimistic activity. As a visual reference point, the Linesman has selected one of his travelogue photographs taken at an abandoned communist prison in Tallinn (Estonia) as the artwork for this release. This EP is not intended to be a comforting listening experience.

This is a very personal album about some time spent in Iceland with my wife. After returning from a very memorable honeymoon, I was full of musical ideas. Imagining I was creating a soundtrack to a film that didn't exist I set about writing and recording. The imaginary film had little of a story, it was set in Iceland and it was February.

As I have in the past with Bratislava Story, Warsaw Story and Amsterdam Story; I wore my musical travel writer hat. I tried to recreate with sound the beauty we saw and the experiences we had.

This completely self indulgent two year project has resulted in a very fair reflection of our trip. So join us and experience the northern lights of the Grindavik skies, the friendliness of the local people in Damon Albarn's Kaffibarinn or simply close your eyes and imagine your own Reykjavik Story under the Icelandic Skies.

Fresh from his recent ‘An Evening With…’ guest slot on Nemone’s excellently eclectic ‘Electric Ladyland’ radio show on BBC 6Music, the Linesman’s distinctive brand of electronica flows seamlessly between the horizontal and the vertical throughout ‘Suite IV’, conjuring up imaginary widescreen movie soundtracks; spaced-out shoegazing electronic bliss; experimental groovetronica; and dubbed out slo-mo symphonies – all possessing an exceptional hypnotic beauty. Through these seven tracks, he explores the passive, thoughtful and peaceful defining aspects of Hans Eysenck’s Phlegmatic personalities, via his uniquely distinctive musical interpretations, creating a series of remarkable final pieces to complete this experimental aural jigsaw puzzle.

After his recent remix of the Russian Linesman’s “The Trigan Empire”, we welcome Mig Dfoe back to Loki Recordings for his first mini-album since 2011’s fantastic “How to Talk to the Moon”.  This new 8 song expedition is an interesting one, requiring an open mind and a touch of antiquity.

Recorded in 2008, this is an album that has repeatedly flirted with the idea of release, only to be kept “under a desk until the right moment surfaced”. Mig Dfoe has decided on its 11 year anniversary, it is finally time for it to be heard. We are delighted that Loki Recordings has the honour of being the vessel. Over to Mig to explain what you are about to experience:

“The idea is that “The Part We Don’t Know” is effortless but intricate at the same time. It is the most pop work I have done. It is really emotive to put this album out this year. The songs are really a life story, so maybe it is a cabalistic time!!”
