Me senté en una silla y me quedé mirando. Era un espectáculo glorioso de nada: ruido sin propósito, luces epilepticas. La gente seguía moviéndose al compás de ese ritmo frenético y estridente. “OMG esto es muy divertido”, pensé, mientras el absurdo me masajeaba el lóbulo frontal con uñas sucias.

La alegría era inminente, como una descarga eléctrica a un cadáver. Sonreíamos todos, felices de estar atrapados en esta maraña de rituales grotescos. Una voz se alzó sobre el estruendo y balbuceó algo sin sentido. El resto clamó una ovación por tan inteligibles palabras. Acto seguido, el cuerpo del que procedía la voz vomitó confeti y la congregación lo nombró presidente sin funciones.

Joy was imminent, like an electric shock to a corpse. We all smiled, happy to be trapped in this choreography of primal impulses. A voice rose above the din and mumbled something unintelligible. The crowd erupted in applause for such articulate words. We had enthusiastically hit rock bottom and called it progress. Someone threw up glitter and we made them president.
