Kapten Ellen - Kalla Vindar(Candide cover)

Shadowland were formed in the summer of 1984 by ex-Rubella Ballet guitarist Sean & Bass player (& Sex Gang Children merchandiser) Kim Marchant. After recruiting Isle of Sheppey born drummer Steve Crickmore to their ranks they began rehearsals in earliest, writing several songs that would remain in their set for some time. After trying out on vocals Kim felt she wash’t confident enough to be the front person full time so the search for a singer was on. After trying several people out with no luck Kim asked her friend Bridget Powling if she wanted to try out as main vocalist with Kim doing backing vocals. She did, & so Shadowland were born. 

Their first gig was at the Clarendon Hotel basement bar in Hammersmith in November 1984 supporting Sean’s good friends & housemates Actifed. The gig went very well, although the set was a little brief as singer Bridget out of the loos due to stage fright! When she finally did get onstage she loved every minute & the band realised they had something special. Their second gig, again with Actifed, got great reviews in the music press. 

Over the next 3 years Shadowland played many gigs around the UK, supporting some great bands. There were some grey gigs with Jeffrey Lee Pierce, Alien Sex Fiend, The Flowerpot Men, Erazerhead, Joy, Christian Death & good friends Manifesto, Four Came Home & of course, Actifed. Two demos were recorded in 1985 & a proposed single recorded later in 1985. The first demo was produced by good friends Andi & Cam from Sex Gang Children. 

In Feb 1985 Bridget left the band & Kim now felt confident enough to take over the vocal duties as well as playing bass. Shadowland were now a 3 piece. More gigs followed & the band tried to get their self financed single ‘Fear of Fear’ released, with a couple of close calls, but ultimately it remained unreleased. In Feb. 1987 Steve Crickmore left the band leaving them drummer-less & finding a replacement proved difficult. They tried several drummers throughout 1987, including good friend & Four Came home drummer Winky. All through this time Kim & Sean wrote many songs, but the bands sound was changing, heading to the more ‘Rock’ sound of artists like The Cult & Zodiac Mindwarp. This was reflected by the addiction of bass player Dave Bower, allowing Kim to concentrate on vocals. They even used a drum machine for a while, but sadly after a few gigs at the end of 1988 they decided to call it a day. It’s a shame that Shadowland never got the break they badly needed, there were some great songs in amongst all that crimped hair…
