London Art Fair 2016 Talks and Discussions Programme

This year's Photo50 exhibition Feminine Masculine: On the Struggle & Fascination of Dealing with the Other Sex explores the challenge of representing the mysterious, at times ineffable and immaterial, dynamics between a woman and a man. Led by Feminine Masculine curator Federica Chiocchetti, hear short presentations from a number of the Photo50 artists who will discuss their work in the show and how it relates to the themes of the exhibition.

The artists featured included Jo Broughton, Natasha Caruana, Francesca Catastini, Discipula, EJ Major, Maya Rochat and Maija Tammi.

Artists are a major contributor to London’s international reputation of as a city of culture. Yet, in recent years, many have felt priced out of the capital, relocating to regional cities.

We ask a panel including an artist, curator, policy maker and studio gallery manager why this is happening, how it is affecting the arts ecology and what can be done to reverse the trend.

Artist Studios in London: Keeping creativity in the capital

he charity PhotoVoice uses photography to help ensure that nobody is denied the opportunity to speak out and be heard. But many areas of the photographic industry tend to be dominated by older, white, middle class, western men.

Join PhotoVoice for a panel discussion which explores barriers which might prevent more diversity in both the professional photographic industry and in the images we see, and learn how some are overcoming these.

Encouraging diversity in photography | In association with PhotoVoice

Photomonitor founding editor Christiane Monarchi joined by a panel of photographic artists whose practice involves navigating remote territory in order to achieve highly original images:

Jon Tonks - his recent series 'Empire' is a journey across the South Atlantic exploring life on four remote islands, British Overseas Territories, intertwined through history as relics of the once formidable British Empire. Since 2007 Tonks voyaged 60,000 miles around the Atlantic to Ascension Island, Tristan da Cunha, the Falkland Islands and St Helena to photograph the people and landscapes and pockets of history embedded within each place to create an insight into places that remain part of modern British history. jontonks.com

Simon Brann Thorpe - ' his multifaceted photographic project 'Toy Soldiers' engages soldiers of the Polisario Front in Western Sahara, an area of ongoing colonial conflict, in choreographed compositions and portraits that foreground this particular regional struggle through artistic interrogation of documentary photographic tropes. simonbrannthorpe.com

Chrystel Lebas - Stemming from her interest in looking at how landscapes contain psychological significance in relation to visually concealed histories, Lebas employs photography and the moving image to address a wider understanding of the complex encounter between man and nature. Investigating a variation of sites and returning at key moments during an extended period, the works highlight the complexity of these places, showing a landscape controlled by man and at the same time observing natural phenomena occurring at specific times and places. chrystellebas.com/index.htm

The latest edition of Photoworks Annual looks at women and their roles in photography, as subjects, creators and consumers. For this panel discussion, contributors to the Annual explore themes raised within it and pose questions around the changing landscape of gender and visual culture within photography, with references to the 70s, 80s and now.

Chaired by Olivier Richon - artist and professor at the Royal College of Art, where he is head of the Photography programme. He is represented by Ibid. London & Los Angeles.

Global climate change summit meetings mostly involve business and political leaders; the solutions discussed focus on greenhouse gas emissions and technological fixes. But what can artists and arts organisations contribute?

The panel will discuss how the causes of climate change are arguably a lack of connection to our environment and to the consequences of our actions. This could be described as an aesthetic disconnect or even anaesthesis. Could artists, curators, galleries and museums actually be at the forefront of climate change mitigation?
