Lost Decade

Instrumental up-beat piece. Lots of guitar. Proud of my drum programming on this one. I like how I got the two guitars to 'bounce-off' each other in the 'verse'. The ending is quite chilled with an explosive finish.

Half Man, Half Alive

Instrumental. Recorded to use as an intro for a CD album I intend on putting together, so it's very short at just over 2 minuites. Quite dark and intense.

Precursor

Instrumental guitar-based groove.  This is my longest piece yet.  It's really two pieces that had to become a single piece so each piece would be complete.  The second part is melancholy but I think very uplifting also.

My latest incarnation.

Getting closer to the 'perfect peice of music', though I never want to be in a position where I think I've written the 'perfect peice of music' if you know what I mean. Because where do you go from there? Trying to write that 'perfect peice of music' is, to me, like trying to make something move faster than the speed of light; we are told this is impossible because the energy required to do so is infinite, but there are individuals who are in a position to try, and are trying, to prove this wrong. More importantly, they believe in what they are trying to do. It's trying and believing that matters, even if you know it may be impossible...

Cailan (2014 version)

Recorded 30/12/14.  Came about from strumming two chords on an acoustic guitar.  I started to build it up and nearly lost my way during the process as I couldn't get the ending I wanted.  At a later recording session, out of frustration, I drank a bottle of wine, plugged my electric guitar in and ended up with the ending I wanted after one-take.  I like this mix for now, though I may remix it later.

Get On That

I started playing bass guitar in a band I joined in 1991.  Like most bands, we went our separate ways after recording demos and playing lots of gigs with no success.  I then put another band together, me again on bass, and we recorded a demo and did a few gigs.  This band pretty much imploded due to personality conflicts and the usual rock ‘n’ roll clichés such as drink and drugs etc.  One thing I did learn from this was never  to form a 3-piece band with your twin brother and your dealer.

It was while after the a fore-mentioned debacle, in 1996 I think, that I realized that being in a band no longer held the allure that had captivated me from an early age.  However, I still had the desire to create music.  So I sold my car and pissed-off to Australia to have a think about what I was gonna do.  It was then I decided that it would be up to me to put my ideas to tape.  On my return I bought my first 4-track portable recording studio, taught myself how to play 6-string, program a drum machine, play a bit of keyboards and have been recording on my own ever since…

… but It is only now that I think other people might want to hear the noise I make.

I write and record all of my own material at Total Groove Studio (a corner of a room in my house in Salford!) on a digital 8-track portable recording studio.  All of the instruments you hear, apart from the drums, are played by me.  The drums are from a drum machine with every drum pattern created by me; no preset patterns or samples used.

My influences include The Chameleons, Puressence, Joy Division, New Order, Mogwai, Massive Attack, PJ Harvey, Spiritualized, Six by Seven plus many others.

My music is instrumental and atmospheric.  I have of late been creating what you might call 'more song based' material with the scope for adding vocals, which is a new thing for me.  I am not a vocalist, though I did record vocals on my track Realization.
