The Commodore 64 was the primary choice for gamers in the early 80s.  This nicotine-colored plastic wonder created the foundation of gaming as we know it today and still stands as one of the most impactful devices ever made for games.

The C64 was blessed with the three-channel SID chip (Sound Interface Device), which was partially analog and digital.  The SID chip has several analog anomalies, which is why it still hasn't been fully emulated even today, including natural detuning, noise and imperfect clicks. We Ultra Deep-Sampled™ three different SID chips over two generations of chipsets from the SID Station and the MOS Sammich, which contains newer generations (less noisy) variations of the infamous chipset.

The Soundpaint Juno 60 UDS is the first Ultra Deep-Sampled™ representation of its kind.  In fact - we deep-sampled two different Juno 60s, since the analog components mature in different ways and each synth actually sounds different. 

All classic programs of this magical unit are there and 100% realistic. Lush nostalgic pads, modern cinematic arps, stabby 80s brass, warm basses, trancy leads.  All the hallmark sounds of this timeless instrument capture in highest fidelity human possible.

We both deep-sampled raw outputs of the machine (with and without its infamous chorus), including all Oscillator types at multiple settings, a cascade of deep filter states.  And then additional deep-sampling sessions of satured oscillators through a large variety of outboard gear, including the Roland 501 Tape Machine, Meris and Strymon pedals, several outboard consoles (NEVE and API).

This homage won her first place in the sean nós competition at the 1998 Great American Irish Fair. Sean nós – “old style” in Irish – is a highly ornamented style of a cappella singing.

1968 Harmony B3 Organ "Live Demo" (Solo) By Nicholas Semrad

Did you know that some of the earliest chiptune synths were not 8-bit, but had an even grittier 1-bit sound?

The ZX Spectrum line of personal computers was first released back in 1982. They had an 8-bit architecture, but presented a 1-bit audio system across their eight different models. We were fortunate enough to sample this entire series of computers in collaboration with UK-based expert, Andy Jenkinson. Andy has the largest "living" collection of Spectrum computers around, and is the leading authority on deep-sampling these classic chiptune instruments.

And when we say deep-sampled, we mean deep... We even captured the wonderfully robotic Currah 1-bit text-to-speech voice synthesis peripheral, featuring over 2500 spoken phrases. Andy and Troels worked for over 18 months to sample this very special and comprehensive collection in the deepest, most realistic, and highest fidelity possible. The end result is an encyclopedic Ultra Deep-Sampled™ chiptune compendium that doesn't emulate, but instead offers you the actual sonic output, direct from the ultra-rare vintage units themselves.

What do you get when you combine two acoustic guitars? A 12-string guitar, but not the kind that you might be familiar with. This experimental 12-string is a unique instrument by Oliver Codd designed to perform in a virtual domain due to its beautifully simple, yet limited design. All of the strings are tuned to the same note, resulting in a large, rich, ensemble-like sound that, while sonically pleasing, renders it very difficult to play in a live context. Through sampling, all of the lovely tones could be captured and the performance limitations transcended, opening up a whole new world of creative possibilities.
