Soma:Redux

Gelatine is taken from my forthcoming Album "Morphology 1.0" (available 11.11.2013). It's a chunky slice of hardware driven experimental electronica with a heavier beat driven focus than some of my previous releases. 
This slice of electronica is a flipped out, freaked out beat-fest of gelatinous portions.

The original track appears on  "The Desolate Sound of Extinction" and was remixed exclusively by Adrian Lendon (aka Little Bird's) for the release Morphology 1.0.

Written arranged, composed, programmed & produced by myself.
I wanted to create a track that was inspired by my Fathers life. 
He was a talented Mathematician and Professor Emritus. 
He passed away midway through this project. 
So I used the source material in a manner I felt could best fit a new composition that told the story of his lifes journey. 
Dad was an avid lover of classical music so I just want to thank DSO Berlin for this opportunity and for providing such wonderful source material to tell the story of one mans journey from this world into a new one.

Roland Gaia 2 Demo Patch Examples

Test using my new Kilpatrick Audio Phenol Desktop Modular - recorded with no effects (built in delay) + a small reverb send with no post processing.

Phenol 1

A quick demo of a bass patch i knocked up this morning (levels may be off due to ear infection) - drums courtesy of Microtonic with no post processing except for a limiter on the master buss out - recorded in realtime with knob tweaking.

This time I wanted to create something more in context with how we might use something like Phenol every day in the studio. This is a simple single note melodic progression over 20 bars.
1 send/return effect (Valahalla Shimmer)
1 insert effect - custom NI Molekular patch (with a wet dry blend of 40% dry to 60% wet).
No other processing used but I wanted to create something that didn't sound to far off what Phenol would sound like through an expensive top end effects unit like an Eventide or something similar.
The results are suitably lush and stunning in equal measure.

Manipulations carried out using time trip pad
Parametric EQ only on the MFX and a built in Chorus 1 effect.

OSC 1 : A custom found sound sample created using various objects in a round metal bowl layered into one sample.
OSC 2 : A sample of the Saw wave from a friends Moog Sub 37
It really can sound incredibly huge, especially when you reign your filter work in on the TVF's sweet spots.

Throwing Shade

Butt Flotsum

Just a demo of sync and an external arp using two oscillators with the phase of one inverted and panned to the left the other through the right and fed through NI's Replika.

Phenol - Ping Arp Demo

Another test clocking two different EG's via the divider whilst playing an external arp and tweaking EG settings live with some tempo synced delay and Valhalla reverb.

Creating new Monomachine kits for compositional ideas for new material. 
Just a quick pattern test of this new kit "Iridium" which uses the following machines.

1. FM+>DYN machine - kick drum
2. DPRO>DDRW - bass line
3. FM+>PAR - FM delay FX
4. DPRO>BOX - misc percussion
5. GND>NOISE - hi hat
6. FX>REVERB (neighbour input for hi hat pattern only).

So far so good.


MnM - Iridium Kit Test

Working on some new custom sound banks for the JD-XA - this one used 2 Analog parts and 2 Digital parts only. Getting back into creating some patches for this synth as i want to create more than a simple bank of 16 patches (so it is taking longer than expected).
This patch is simply titled "Requiem".
Tracked live into Logic with two effects sends (custom dub reverb chain and delay) with MFX used on all parts but no TFX or master FX in the signal path.

Roland JD - XA Chillout Demo

A demo of Roland's JD-XA -
This was to demonstrate the crossover aspects of the digital and analog engines. Int his instance I have an analog poly patch in unison mode with unison set to -1 octave.
A single digital oscillator using a PWM 2 waveform on digital part 1.
With dual detuned X-mod Wave6 oscillators on digital part 2.
Both digital parts are pre-filtered via the digital LP filters in 12db mode before being sent through the the analog engines filter.
The  OSC 1 Mod source is set to AUX and the two digital parts are cross modulating the analog engine.
Oscillator one on the analog engine is SAW and on OSC2 PWM with OSC 2's phase sync set to off.
TFX1 - Chrous
TFX2 - Tape Echo
No MFX on the analog part.
MFX are Equalizer & Chorus in tat order for digital parts 1 & 2.
Audio rate LFO mods and Cross Modulation tweaks perfomed live.
No other external effects used except for the glue compression on the master channel.


JD-XA : Anadigi Xm0d Demo

Another demo of Roland's JD-XA -
This was to demonstrate the crossover aspects of the digital and analog engines. I wasn't happy with the end result of the last experiment so reprogrammed this from an intitialized patch and created a fresh demo.
I have an analog poly patch in unison mode.

Roland JD-XA DigiAna Crossover Demo 2

A short example of how subtle the JD-XA 12db per octave Low pass filters can sound on a soft and mellow digital PWM + SQ wave string patch.

A test of new sound patches using just the JD-XA's analog engine.
In this instance I have recorded the JD-XA over USB audio whilst running the mono direct analog synth output through a frequency shifter (50/50 wet dry mix with a +4.04hz shift) and a tape delay unit.
Any extra inherent noise is via the tape delay.
No EQ, mild compression on master channel and a stereo imaging processor on the USB audio part for extra width only.
Rendered in one take.
I quite like the results.

JDXA - Just Analog

Nothing special just a quick patch test of 3 new patches created this morning using the S8 engine only.
I am working on patches for new material and want to see where i can take the System-8 engine from initialized patches up. Drums TR-8.
It can sound quite mellow when tweaked just right and its great for Reese basses I have discovered.

Here's a short demo for those wondering how the internal reverb can sound.
The Plate Reverb in this instance is very usable and the myriad of internal delay types can make for good embedded effects in a patch. 
In this instance I have used 1 analog patch using a Saw + Pulse (with slow PWM) for the oscillators.
The trick here is to use OSC Sync with LFO 1 doing super slow pitch modulation of OSC 2 (PWM waveform) and LFO 2 modulating the Pulse Width. If you then ad a single Digital SAW part and use it to cross modulate the analog section with sync active you get the effect of drifting oscillators that sound more VCO like without the need for a slop function on the DCO waveforms.
I've tweaked section of the internal effects and crossed / filter live for subtle tonal variations.
It has its own sound in many respects which is why I like it so much.

JD-XA Effects And Crossmod + Sync Demo

Working on new album material and am creating tracks that focus on limited gear use. This uses 2 sounds layered on the V-Synth and a custom JD-XA patch with the percussive sounds being CR-78 and field recordings manipulated in the V-Synth too.
The Flute like sound is actually morphing into the metallic like overtones on the V-Synth itself. I wanted to take a fundamentally played out "new age" like sounds and see how I could twist it sonically into something fresh.
The two synths play really well together IMHO.

Just a test on my SH-01A trying out a variation on Aphex Twin's Polynomial C - not mean to be a cover etc but a sound test.

Working on a series of Pads that use the analog engine only and no digital parts. Just testing one out in using chords in a diatonic scale.
Tape delay and reverb courtesy of the Boss DD-500 and RV-500.
Phaser etc all internal FX.
So far so good.

Quick test to see if key trig on and tempo sync works well with one user LFO and one regular LFO on a single VA SAW with modulations.

MC-707 LFO Sync Test

Little Bird's "Deosil" as remixed by myself.
This will appear alongside the original mix on Little Bird's Black Acid 2 EP due out soon.
The original is a brooding slice of acid breakbeat and quite different to my take where 303's became glitches and percussive sounds, the pads and Juno's where turned into ambient beds and the bass, rhythmic and piano parts added from the ground up.
Equal parts abstract drum&bass and oddly lilting and impressionistic in nature.
We both hope you enjoy this remix.
