1) “Son the Father” Intro

So we had just finished a tour through the end of winter with our friend Kurt Vile and we wanted to do one of those gimmicky home-coming shows at the end of it, so we decided a week beforehand to play a full version of Chemistry of Common Life like we'd done earlier in the winter in New York.  We announced it to the news papers and everything and just before we got home decided to kind of can the idea. Katie Stelmanis was on tour so we couldn't do “Royal Swan” anyhow, and we didn't really feel like playing the title track either, and maybe we skipped one of the instrumentals. We also threw “Crusades” right in the middle of the set for some reason. But what we did manage to get was Jonah's mom to come down and do the proper introduction to the set on flute, as she'd done on the album, which we weren't able to do in New York. Jonah recorded it all on his digi 8-track and it sounds amazing, and because of the magic of technology, I made it sound like a live intro to...

2) “The Other Shoe”
From the David Comes to Life album

Here's the first single to our new album, which you've already heard if you care about us and spend some time on the internet.  We all had weird feelings about this song while we were writing it because it's kind of poppy and anthemic or whatever, but then Matador came to one of our practices and heard the track and gave us a million dollars no questions asked for the track/album, à la “Not in Love” by 10cc. So we decided to record 74 more minutes of music and voilà, our new album.

3) Jennifer Castle “Powers”

Jennifer has been a long time friend and artistic compatriot of ours. We've shared the stage with her, and you should remember her haunting vocals from Year of the Pig. We also covered one of her songs, “For my Friends”.  She was gracious enough to sing again on our new record (“The Other Shoe” included) so here is an amazing song that will be on her new record.

4) Animal Man “Do You Feed?”

So right after we'd finished writing almost 2 hours of music for the songs that would feature on the David collection, we decided why not write an entirely new album of material and release it as a fake compilation to go with the David record.  We took maybe 5 practices and wrote like 12 or 13 songs and recorded the best ones. Me and Jonah also did this thing when we were alone in the studio (which basically described my life during the entire period of October 2010 to March 2011) where I'd go downstairs into the live room and record a full-song guitar track live and completely off the top of my head, and he'd go down stairs afterwards and record drums in one take off the top of his head, and I'd go put down bass, and etc. until we had 4 or 5 songs made up of these one-time-only takes that ended up sounding kind of cool. Maybe you will be able to hear them one day. But anyhow, of the tracks we kept for David’s Town, we then sent them to some friends to put vocals on. Ben grabbed this track that Jonah wrote and penned an ode to curry, one of the great British delicacies. Curry is everywhere, obviously, but it's a special thing in the UK. There have been many curry meals for us over the years, from gross curry sauce on chips in Liverpool while watching a house burn down, to some of the hottest curry on earth in that place in Leeds in the park, and who could forget the place in Bradford where the naan is the size of your table.


5) Mad Men “Wax World”

Jonah doesn't really have access to current events and media for some reason, so in 2009 while the show Mad Men was ripping up the Neilson charts (do these even exist anymore?) and women's’ Facebook status updates everywhere, he formed a one man band, also called Mad Men.  Eventually some one will clue him in about the TV show, and he will watch it, right after he finishes watching The Wire and Thirty-somethings. Anyways, besides all that, Mad Men (the band, not the award winning, ubiquitous, hit TV show) is some pretty ripping stuff, his seamless tribute to the glorious anvil headed hardcore of the great lost years of the middle 1980s (i.e. right before he was born).  He was gonna call this song “Wayne's World” but I advised against it, for obvious reasons.  Jonah responds:  “1st Mad Men Demo was recorded June, 2007.  1st Mad Men TV episode aired July ’07, haha, so there.”  


6) “B”

Now, one of the old standbys in punk music is the “three chord” melody, where the rotation between three notes on the scale makes up the melody of the song. Take basically any Ramones song as an example.  Even in our infancy as MRR-poster children, Fucked Up was still very much a situationist project for us.  We felt that three chords in music was as bourgeois as having three BMWs in the driveway. And plus, our white socio-economic guilt could not abide by us taking chords away from punk bands lower down on the rungs of privilege as us (like d-beat bands, or Career Suicide), so we decide it was only right that we try and rely as much as we could on the bounty provided by just one chord, the chord B. Location right on the middle of the neck of the guitar, not too deep or too high, not too flashy, right in the middle, perfect for our sensibilities. Almost our entire discography is a testament to the affectiveness of this solitary note. When played as a power chord with the bottom strings ringing open, it's a wonderful thing. Keith Richards eat your heart out. A small prix fixe of our use of B is below:

7) “The Lurking Fear”
Live at CIUT radio, Toronto, sometime in 2001

Three songs from this set are included on the Epics in Minutes compilation of 2004, because it was the best sounding live material we had at the time. The set is drenched in feedback and blissful incompetency.  Fucked Up in 2001 was indeed something to see. Damian had hair, I was probably wearing a bandana on my head, Josh was 14, etc.  We owned one amp between the 5 of us, and practiced once a week on rented equipment in a rehearsal factory where at least two people had died that year. We smelled, were weird(er), loved punk and wore patches on our clothes.  This song I think was taken from our demo and subsequently suppressed.  The guitar solo at the end was “performed” by Ben Cook, who was playing with the band As We Once Were at the time, and took over guitar duties on the day because Josh had just started playing the instrument a few weeks prior and was of yet uncomfortable playing guitar solos live on community radio. Ben would later pop up as a fill-in drummer a few years later and then he joined the band full time obviously.

8) “Heir Apparent”

This song is about Holden, Damian's young son.  I'm not sure how many people actually got a copy of this single, because it was designed and executed strategically as a marketing tool, released in tandem with our second singles collection album, with which it shares its name.  For some reason this song made it regularly into the set list throughout 2010 and 2011. It is a “sweet little ditty” and resides purely on the “ripped off the Undertones” side of the FU tracks.

9) “Maxwell’s Banter”
Performed live at Maxwell’s, Hoboken NY, Feb 18 2010

This is a place where many bands come to play during extended stays in the New York area. It's just across the river in the lovely little Potemkin city of Hoboken, which television enthusiasts may know from the show “Cake Boss”, which is filmed down the street from this venue.  Hoboken as far as I know is basically one large street (and the residences just behind) that has every type of food retailing establishment on earth, including purportedly the largest slice of pizza in the five boroughs (imagine using a loaf of bread to mop up the mess of cheese and sauce used by someone who was making a good slice of pizza, and then eating it).  The tricky thing about Maxwell’s is that they feed you a meal in their restaurant before your show. A typical vegetarian meal at Maxwell’s consists of french fries, chili and a grilled cheese sandwich. All very tasty, like a delicious millstone around your neck for the rest of the evening. Very hard to harness the vitality needed for an evening of dramatic musical magic after the carbo shock of such a meal. Henceforth when you see us at Maxwell’s, it will be at 11am, just before lunch.

10) “Ballad Of Hammerhead”

Speaking of New Jersey, just south of Maxwell’s is the home of WFMU, the favorite radio station of many.  We have done a few sessions for the Terre T show, and as Damian is a rabid devotee of the “Best Show on WFMU” show, we've done this song for them.  As far as anyone knows this song will be the accompaniment to a cartoon animation of one of Newbridge, NJ’s most infamous characters -- Hammerhead, the king of Newbridge HC -- on a DVD that is being produced by the show. As gratitude for donating this Menace-style jam, Tom Scharpling joined us on stage at Matador's 21st Birthday party to sing a Superchunk song wearing a Ernst Borgnine style captain's hat.

11) Ben Rayner and the Pricks “Slovakian Pete”

Most fans of music will agree that the opportunity to play a festival would rank among the highlights in life. Rubbing noses with famous rockstars, playing in front of thousands of adoring fans, the mile a minute lifestyle and backstage secrets of the traveling troubadour lifestyle.  In reality, playing a festival as an artist is 50% trying to sit comfortably on a white plastic chair, 25% looking for the bathroom (they are in the next field over), 24% looking for artist catering (it's just on the other side of the lake, you have to take a paddle boat and the Flaming Lips are using all of those right now onstage, sorry) and 1% awkwardly  trying not stare at the actual famous rockstars that you have accidentally sat down next to in artist catering or in line (a few examples:  Jonah sitting almost in between the singer of The Killers and his wife and newborn baby because he didn't know who The Killers were; Damian picking a spot about 10 feet away from Kate Nash and losing his appetite out of crippling nervousness; me waiting in line for gross curry in Australia basically in between Slash and Zach de la Rocha, me staring directly at the ground).  Nonetheless, the ATP festivals in the UK and US are the coloured-in highlights of any tour.  Great bands, great accommodation, cool people, very chill atmosphere, lots of drugs.  Yet even the most well tended festival is not immune to the great call of boredom.  Some anecdotes from our first ATP, in the Butlins resort near Wales, included being on the internet for probably 50 hours in one weekend, almost literally falling asleep at a table in a Burger King while watching the Dirty Three (best seats in the house), watching Man City beat Chelsea on TV in the in-house bowling alley, trying not to fall asleep during an interview with Sonic Boom that I couldn't leave because there was only like 5 people there, playing at 3am (right after My Bloody Valentine for some reason), trying not to bump into Bobby Gillespie in line for catering, and watching a tech on side stage fall asleep in his chair 5 feet from my amplifier.  Of course, to the industrious, no festival is an opportunity wasted.  Ingeniously, ATP in Butlins also has a studio facility.  In about 2 hours Jonah, Ben and our other friend Ben Rayner formed a band and recorded a demo of 4 songs.  The demo became a minor internet sensation after one song capitalized on the fake feud we'd orchestrated with Sonic Youth that weekend. Anyhow, this is one of the other songs, about Slovakian Pete, a Rayner-penned portrait of the poetic everyman: Pete of Butlins' Burger King. Emigré from the hills of (World Cup 2010 Hopefuls) Slovakia, he noticed Rayner in line and shouted at him beyond the queue: “Hey! You Louke Likeah deh Clash!” Ben's eye as a photographer no doubt went to work, but instead of putting the real lens in front of his face, he put pen to paper and came up with the crucial rhyme of “Meat” with “Pete”.
