After one and a half decade and more than 450 releases, Compost Records bundles some of their finest tunes as Various Artists digital download compilation albums. The variety and full spectrum of Compost’s repertoire has never or rarely been presented in form of a musical genre compilation. These releases will be compiled or DJ-mixed by Compost’s artists and are available as digital downloads, except in some rare cases very very limited as 500 CDs.

For this selection, our label mate Eddy Ramich (Eddy Meets Yannah) dug in the Compost archive for the finest Broken Beat and NuJazz gems from almost forgotten times. Big names like Moonstarr, Domu, Seiji or Alex Attias mark the highlights, but also Compost classics from the likes of Kyoto Jazz Massive, Beanfield, Voom:Voom (project by Peter Kruder, Christian Prommer & Roland Appel) are represented. Rafael Da Cruz’ debut 12“ finally hits the streets, dipping into deeper, gloomier spheres of house. Soaring synths cleverly trim the bed of fat broad baselines. The Black 80s give the original a wicked analogue touch, with a splendid soulful vocal version as bonus track. Cosmic Cowboys and David Hasert supply two impressive remixes that both create a dark, but uniquely vibrant scenery and complete the package.

With a name like that, you should become a leading actor in an Coen-Brothers-Movie, professional soccer player at Benfica Lisbon or head of government with a dictatorial claim for leadership. Eduardo Rafael Da Cruz Ferreira - editor of the magazine FAZEmag - early devoted himself to electronic music. His graceful and melancholic interpretation of deep house he quickly made a name for himself in numerous clubs from Cologne, over Hamburg to Berlin and at festivals like PollerWiesen, RaveOnSnow, Utopia Island and Nature One. With "Right To Love" he started running his own night in Cologne's most famous Club called Gewölbe, where he presents acts like Maceo Plex, Mario Basanov, Ten Walls, Deniz Kurtel, Miguel Campbell, H.O.S.H. or PillowTalk in a very exclusive atmosphere.

As I explained in last year’s mix (link), surviving a Montreal is no joke: winters here average anywhere from -20 to -30, but the most painful part is that it last 5 months. Needless to say, Spring has a bit of extra magic to it when you’ve suffered so much for it.

When I sat down and started doing research for the spring mix last year I quickly realized how many spring-themed albums and songs there are. My focus with “IT HAPPENS EVERY SPRING” is to try and capture the glorious feeling of opening up your windows and doors for the first time in months. To feature music that is powerful, spiritual and sometimes just fun stuff to have a bike ride to…

Last years’ mix had a more upbeat feel but this year it was impossible for me to replicate that vibe because of what i’ve been going through these past few months. This year’s mix features some cheerful songs as well as some sad ones too but all of them are beautiful and inspiring in their way. More importantly, it’s music that is helping me through some tough times.

Since its inception in 2010, much of Uncanny Valley's output has found its way into our proverbial (and literal) record bags here at Flux. As big fans of both Jacob Korn and Cuthead, we watched the label grow, accommodating releases from the likes of Massimilano Pagliara and Joel Alter. In its relatively short lifetime, Uncanny Valley has become an extremely well regarded label in European house music.

It's a privilege to be hosting an exclusive from the Dresden-based label, but for now we'll leave you with a quote from the press release that summarises the release far more accurately than we ever could...

Ethiopian inspired jazz from Israel is the compound of Sandman Project. It’s a heady mix overseen by Tal Sandman, the guitarist and leader of the group based in Jaffa, the Arabic district of Tel Aviv. Consisting of just four band members on guitar, trumpet, bass and drums, they are set to release their debut Royal Family EP on the mighty Batov Records.

‘Savannah Trip’, the 5th and last track on the record, is an invitation to traverse the Malian desert with an insistent sense of purpose that could easily be lost with a larger group or production. It reflects a marriage of psychedelic West African rock and Ethopian jazz carried by swirling trumpets and the adventure of Tal’s guitar. The fretboard is pushed to the limits as the band slink through the door of the cosmos and join Sun Ra in ethereal, improvisational vibration.

A sophisticated little bastard of a DJ-mix

It’s about time for the fifth instalment of the Compost Black Label Series – unveiling some of the finest cuts in the label’s recent history in a versatile DJ mix crafted by Compost family member Thomas Herb, who built a strong reputation as a DJ when it’s about merging soul-injected house, techno and disco into a musical journey. Featuring winner tunes and remixes by Phreek Plus One, Osunlade, Woolfy, DJ T. or Rainer Trueby, Herb is also highlighting the work of new breed like Emil Seidel, Philipp Stoya and Emilie Nana, who all contributed high-quality tunes on the Black Label within the last year. Playing on top of the game since about one and a half decades, the Bob Beaman resident DJ, holding a steadily growing national and international schedule, is kicking things off with some proper nu-school vibes until he smoothly blends to balearic and disco influenced territories – then somehow he’s already in the middle of Holland Tunnel, the New Jersey styled tune by Muallem, opening our minds eye for the glittering skyline of Manhattan and our ears for this music called house - unfolding its purest grooves and energy within the mix. Keeping up the level, Thomas Herb subsequently heading the ship towards a middle west inspired direction, throwing in some decent rave signals without loosing his fluent, elegant style he carefully morphs into a old school Chicago vibe! The set is closing with Lukas Bohlender’s beautiful stringloaden emo-houser Club Chateâu. Apart from storytelling, quality and programming the tunes itself, Thomas Herb unmistakably put some extra focus on adding this kind of warm, handcrafted, dynamic live-vibe – and he succeeds big time with this sophisticated little bastard of a DJ-mix.

With Compost Records head honcho Michael Reinboth, Thomas Herb co-hosted the Compost Black Label Sessions clubnights held at Harry Klein and later at Bob Beaman for the last four years – sharing the decks with the likes of Jerome Sydenham, Deetron, Jay Shepheard, Osunlade, Agnés, John Talabot, Willie Graff, Kalabrese, Karizma, Heidi, Permanent Vacation, Move D & Thomas Meinecke, DJ T., Nuno Dos Santos and many more. With SHOW-B he’s teaming up for some well recieved productions and remixes from time to time – these smart guys also hosting the weekly radioshow Compost Black Label Sessions, which has been set up in order to spread the vibe of the label and correspondent clubnight to a wider audience.
