Single 01: 'Come Into the Light' features vocalist @La-Coco and beats from @FrankBooker with Nathan playing keys & on production duties. A classic sounding dance track in the tradition of Nathan’s well-loved UK albums from the early 2000s, but with a current sound and production style very much in vogue in 2024.

Single 002: UK-based producer/DJ @Atjazz has delivered a stunning remix, retaining the original vocal with all new music, featuring a flute solo from Nathan recorded exclusively for this remix. Atjazz is one of soulful dance music’s most prolific and respected producers with a worldwide following.

‘Belo Dia’ is a love letter to Brazilian music, bringing warm, evocative harmonies, a smooth bassline and infectious energy. The gleaming vocals weave through the rich instrumental layers, celebrating the joyous and carefree spirit of Brazilian culture with Cuica (otherwise known in Brazil as the talking drum). Featuring real strings and drums captured by vintage microphones and gear, the track is a soundscape that evokes sun-drenched beaches and the spirit of sunnier climes.

Rachel Clarke’s vocals form the centrepiece with a vocal melody doubled with Nathan’s flute, whistling and analog synthesisers, with Jonathan Crayford on piano, bass and string arrangement.  Guitarist Leon Stenning (a former member of Nathan’s live band in the UK) co-wrote the song with Nathan several years ago, and it was a song that Nathan worked on while in hospital when he was undergoing several operations for throat cancer. Now fully recovered, Nathan took the original demo and added additional instrumentation with the result being a track that is representative of his deep love and respect for Brazilian music.

Belo Dia

Nathan Haines single ‘Just Holdin’ On’ featurs New Zealand-based vocalist / visual artist Eo (Badcrop / The Grow Room), showcasing the varied moods of the new album 'Notes'.

Nathan Haines & producer Phil Asher would often include mid-tempo “listening” tracks to break up the pace of an album. With its slower tempo and chilled hip-hop beats, ‘Just Holdin’ On’ brings Eo’s laid back, soulful vocal delivery to the front, while Haines’ saxophone & flute melodies are dripping in longing and yearning. 

Built around a beautiful chord progression from Michal Martyniuk on Rhodes, Nathan enlisted Marc Mac (4 Hero) to add some Visioneers-era boom bap beats, which laid the foundation for the spoken word delivery of Eo (Ethan King). The result showcases another side of Haines’ composition & production style on this album. 

Notes is Haines’ 11th studio album set for release August 9.

Nathan Haines presents a new remix of his track ‘Just Holdin’ On’, coming courtesy of one of NZ’s most sought-after producers, Christoph El Truento. Featuring the chopped-up hip-hop vocals from rapper Eo, the remix takes the track down a house route, while keeping the lo-fi hip-hop and jazzy vibes of the original.

Widely known for deep-diving into different genres, Christoph El Truento has gained acclaim locally and abroad for his unique takes on hip-hop, reggae, jazz, eletronica and ambient music. The recent years has seen a prolific output garner a loyal following worldwide, with his albums Dubs From The Neighbourhood, Circle of Friends and Peace Maker Dub all being critical and underground favorites. A remix from El Truento is a rare treat, with him putting his own spin on ‘Just Holdin’ On’.

'Love You More [edit]' is taken from the forthcoming album: Nathan Haines - Notes (Deluxe Edition), featuring remixes, edits & live recordings alongside the tracks that originally appeared on the 2024 album Notes.

'Love You More' has a classic deep house sound, with Nathan's signature soprano sax recorded in one single take. The tack was co-witten by Nathan's long time collaborator Phil Asher, who tragically passed away in 2021.

“This was my dedication to Phil after his passing. It was a shock to all of us when it happened. He  was so alive and so ‘there’ as a person…it took me a few weeks to really grasp he wasn’t part of  this world anymore. Just Holdin’ On (Instrumental)’, a standalone single lifted from the upcoming Notes (Deluxe Edition) - an expanded re-release featuring edits, remixes, and live versions from Haines’ album Notes.

Stripping away the vocal of the original, the instrumental version puts the composition’s architecture in sharp focus: a downtempo, chilled hip-hop pulse, boom-bap drums from Marc Mac (4 Hero), and a lush Rhodes progression by Michal Martyniuk. With the space cleared, Haines’ saxophone and flute melodies step to the fore, long-line phrases and subtle harmonics that underline the tune’s mood of quiet momentum.
