This song is based on the Parsley Massacre which took place in 1937 in the Dominican Republic in which soldiers threw parsley on civilians. "What's this called?," they would ask. 
If the reponse was "PEREJIL", they were Spanish-speakers from the Dominican Republic would passed unharmed. 
If the response was "PERSIL", they were French-Creole-speakers of Haitian origin and were killed on the spot.
