Hailing from the lands that brought the world new beat, Helsmoortel saw the light after a couple of musical and hedonic explorations. Influenced by 90s boom bap hip hop, rave, jungle, techno and drum and bass, he looks forward to push the feelings that these genres gave him as a small-town boy, into a new aesthetic era. He loves to intersperse hard-hitting drums and distorted sounds with exciting melodies that take hold of the dance floor. His motto is: Nothing is certain, anything goes.

‘Knock The Hustle’, featured here, is an aggressive electro joint with overdriven basslines and distorted drums for that crunchy analog feel that set clubs and ears on fire.

Across the last year Oldboy has established himself as an integral figure within the UK Garage and Breakbeat revival. Through releases on Fly By Night Recordings, Noire State, Outhouse Sounds, Ratface Records, Reloaded Sounds, Da Demolition Squad, algo:riddims, Singularity UK, Special Blends, Over and Out, GLBDOM, 40GRIT Records, Diamond Hands Records, and Slippery Sounds, Oldboy has crafted a truly distinctive production style characterised by playful sampling, sharp drum patterns and club-ready basslines. 

More recently Oldboy has expanded his musical palette from his foundation in 2step Garage, Breaks and Speed Garage to Dubstep, Electro and the “Niche” sound of his hometown Sheffield. 

As the first returning artist on Gimme A Break Records, Oldboy’s “Mule Kick EP” melds numerous musical influences to construct a carefully balanced release. The EP’s opening track “Get Em Up” offers a rolling breakbeat composition founded upon a mischievous organ house bassline. “Sound O’ Da Metro Centre” and “Mule Kick” see a return to Oldboy’s rawer and more sonically aggressive production style with particular reference to Sheffield’s Niche scene in the former. In “Unsettled”, Oldboy experiments with percussive electro while maintaining the EP’s scratchadelic soundscape. Closing the release, Paris-based producer and DJ Pépé Elle provides a mind-warping 808 Remix of “Unsettled” fitted with a contorted half-time second drop for added pleasure.

● Rising Portuguese Producer and DJ - Soru the Shinobi makes a powerful entrance into the UK garage scene with the release of his debut EP titled ‘Is it Over’. Blending moody atmospheres with stripped-back percussive grooves and his signature minimal approach, he layers haunting synth textures with vocal chops to tap into the raw emotion of late-night cityscapes that resonate with listeners searching for depth and grit. The multi-genre artist from Lisbon was also part of the label’s annual compilation ‘Bønewax Vol. 2’.

Soru describes his work as a combination of working many sleepless nights and drawing inspiration from those late hours. Looking at the bright city lights and bustles of the street. Each track gets progressively moody until you get to 'Something Good' and realise it's already morning and ask yourself: 'Is it over?'

Presenting Queens of Club: a two-part VA celebrating the established and up-and-coming women and non-binary producers of Ghetto House, Electro, Footwork & Breakbeat.

Night Shift, shown here, is ten tracks of dark and pacey goodness with plenty of breakbeats and acid to satisfy your club cravings. However “generic” is not in the vocabulary of these producers as recurring themes of dance music are juxtaposed on every track with Ghetto House vocals, moody synths or thematic switch ups that will keep you on your toes, even if you're sitting down.

The title pays homage to the seminal "Queens of Baltimore Club", a highly sought-after LP from various legendary female Bmore artists (like Kotton the Cutie and Mz. Thang) compiled by DJ Technics in 2001. Almost two decades later and the club scene is still a hostile environment for marginalised groups and this compilation aims to address that. Queens of Club is by women/non-binary people, right down to the mastering engineer and the artwork designers, and intended for everyone who likes to shake their ass at high speed!
