In 2021, we welcomed Endrik Schroeder to the Bordello family with his Second Breath 12”. The memorable hooks and attention to detail that characterised his first appearance run deep in his latest. The Hope sees the French producer accompanied by a true legend of electronics, Caroline Hervé aka Kittin. Hervé’s penchant for combining brighter tones with darker shades is evident from the needle. Industrial hiss pierces swirling vocals. Clean claps, warm bass and crystalline chords give way to woe-streaked lyrics, lyrics that ascend into an arc of pulsating synthwave pain. Schroeder takes the reins on the flip. A beam of light is cast over throbbing arpeggios and a slicing snare, notes drifting ever higher as “The Dogs” takes hold. Strings swim as a spread of sounds grow, a palpable energy building under Schroeder’s watchful ear and hand in this seven minute plus odyssey into his machines.

To this end, everyone at Turbo is grateful beyond words that venerable veteran’s veterans Extrawelt are bringing the full bore of their two decades’ experience to bear on this slice of genre-defiling excellence. The German due open with the thorax-pummeling EBM of the title track, followed up by the angry electro of “Angry Elektro.” And if you think the EP lets up from there, keep listening to find out just how wrong what you think is, because the next track is called “Angry Halibut” and sounds exactly what you’re terrified that sounds like. Grindmaster culminates with the goalie-on-acid-fantasy acid banger “Save City” and bottomless warehouse trip-soundtrack “Flunk.” 

Those of you who choose not to support your local record store will be rewarded accordingly, as Extrawelt’s own “Drop Outs in Heaven Remix” of “Flunk” is yours as a digital exclusive. We have no real problem with vinyl lovers but they should probably come to terms with the fact that digital music - and by extension, digital exclusives - is perhaps the defining trend of 2024. This track is the first one I’ve fully produced, properly mixed, and professionally mastered in a very long time. The idea behind it was to capture the organic energy of the dance floor, which I love so much, and which, in my opinion, is no longer achievable with today’s music and the pointless short sets of entertainment DJs. The track is meant to sound as if an organic being is breathing steadily, connecting everyone together, or like a giant tanker on which everyone is embarking on a grand journey together. The track is, in a way, monotonous and repetitive, yet on the other hand, organic and playful. I hope I was able to bring these intentions to life and that you’ll enjoy the track.

Brazilian born producer/DJ Waltervelt returns to Maceo Plex’s Ellum label with a pair of slick and sophisticated tracks on the ‘Modern Slip’ single release.

Last popping up on 2023’s Ellum Sampler V3 EP, Waltervelt has since fired out singles for labels such as Dynamic, Octopus Recordings and Stripped Recordings.  Over a production career that kicked off in 2016, Waltervelt has forged a unique sound characterized by atmospheric textures, pulsating basslines, and intricate rhythms that reflect his passion for exploring the emotional and sensory depths of electronic music.

Two breezy, electro-tinged cuts are served up on this release for Ellum, with ‘Modern Slip’ and ‘Destination 19’ both radiating pure class from this highly talented producer.
