EPM Podcast 142 comes from ghetto-tech, booty, hip-hop, electro, house and techno producer, Detroit’s Filthiest. Detroit’s Filthiest (Julian Shamou) began DJing as a teenager in Detroit in the mid-90s and has gone on to produce over 100 records under multiple aliases including DJ Nasty, Digitek, 313 Bass Mechanics and these days, Detroit's Filthiest. Here for our 142nd podcast we get Detroit’s Filthiest undiluted as Julian shakes it up with new releases ‘Werewolf’ and ‘All White Buffs’ amongst the many rump-shakin’ anthems in his cannon.

Originally born in Baghdad, Shamou and his family moved to Detroit in the summer of 1983, just before the dawn of techno. Despite growing up in Detroit during the ‘80s and ‘90s, Shamou never planned on a career in electronic music.  "All the music that I liked, you could only get on 12" records; they wouldn't make it on CD," he says of his early record collecting days. "I just wanted to have this music.  I was buying vinyl for a year before I bought a $99 turntable.  A year after I bought that turntable, I bought a drum machine and thought, this is more exciting.  I want to make music."

Shamou soon became a part of the city's emerging Ghettotech scene in the late 90s, working primarily under the alias DJ Nasty. In 2002 he released 'Pass Out' under his 313 Bass Mechanics alias for Ed DMX's Breakin Records.  Fast-forward to 2015 and platinum selling UK house dons, Disclosure sample it for their massive ‘Bang That’ track.

Today, Detroit's Filthiest continues to push boundaries with his music production.  Refusing to stick within just one genre he makes hip hop beats, bouncing electro bombs, smooth house cuts, warehouse techno and booty shaking tracks as his Motor City Electro Company imprint (MCEC), which celebrated its 20th anniversary in 2019, continues to channel his creative output and Detroit’s Filthiest becomes his main production alias.

As well as releases on MCEC, he has also released on the likes of Defected (with the smash ‘Handprint’), Casa Voyager, Bass Agenda, Philthtrax, Defrostatica, RotterHague Records and many more.

Detroit’s Filthiest’s new electro track ‘Werewolf’ features on ‘EPM20 – EP2’ alongside new cuts from The Advent and Zein Ferreira, Carl Finlow and Modulator AKA Freddie Fresh.

Detroit legend DJ Godfather blends together a juicy and scratched-up 1h mix, also as a celebration of his new album - 'This Detroit Thing Of Ours' - released earlier this month on his very own label, Databass - ffm.to/djgod-detroit.

DJ Godfather (Brian Jeffries) is one of the founding fathers of the Detroit Ghettotech scene.  He started DJing at the age of 15 and within a few months was already playing in clubs and after-hour parties across the Motor City. 

By 17 he’d started making music and a year later, released his first solo record on Twilight 76 (the label he started with DJ Dick and Brian Gillespie). 

The creation of other labels followed including the influential Databass, which he revived in 2018.  With a career spanning near on 3 decades, he’s continued to deliver the goods as well as supporting new Detroit talent, as his Godfather moniker implies.  

As a DJ, his battle style turntablism has made him a hero in his city - you only have to witness the crowds he pulls at Detroit’s Movement Festival, and the many places around the globe where he’s laid down his fine-tuned skills.

Over the years it’s gained him worldwide recognition and various DJing accolades.

Now back with a brand-new album, DJ Godfather breaks all the rules. The album features 46 tracks and like his last album ('Electro Beats For Freaks'), they segue into one another, until the series of EPs on vinyl (and digital) which will follow featuring full-length versions and different mixes of some of the album's tracks.
