In this LooseKeys project recap, Ethan Barnowsky joins Brad Chmielewski and Jake Williams to talk about creating the animated video for OpenMarq. For this explainer video, we had some issues early on with getting the overall message correct. After 10 versions of the script we finally were on the right track and moved on to the design and animation which ended up going a lot smoother. This was a great project that reminded us about how important communication is with your clients.

LooseKeys - Project Recap - OpenMarq

We’re starting work this week on an animated short about the history of donuts. This was the brainchild of Jake Williams and he’ll be the one to make sure the team eats many donuts while working on this video over the next few weeks. Enjoy the first look at how this project is shaping up and what you can expect to see from LooseKeys as we move forward.

Doughnut to Donut 01: The Start

We are slowly chipping away at our new passion project at the office. In this second look at our animated short "Doughnut to Donut" we dive into creating the characters and defining the art style.

Doughnut to Donut 02: Working On The Art

This past week we have been busy with a handful of client work at LooseKeys and unfortunately haven’t had much time for the internal animated short we’ve been working on. Since there isn’t much to report on the project this week, we decided to instead pick up some donuts from Stan’s Donuts and get inspired. If you’re looking for some animation or illustration talk here you might be disappointed because this week it’s all about some good old fashioned donut talk.

Doughnut to Donut 03: Taking A Bite

We are a month into the animated short we’re working on at the office. At the moment it’s not as far along as we would really like it to be but each day we try to make a little bit of progress. The upfront work is often the hardest part of any project. Hopefully once all the artwork finally comes together then the animation will all fall into place.

Doughnut to Donut 04: A True Southern Gentleman

We're starting to get into a solid groove with the donut video, especially as we get closer and closer to the deadline. It's easy to dream big when you have months to wrap up a project but those months quickly turn into weeks and you need to keep moving forward. This past week we were able to lock down a voice over artist and make some progress on the animation treatment for the type.

Doughnut to Donut 05: Type & Voice Over

This week on our donut animation project we finally had some time to take care of more of the artwork. As the style takes shape and the deadline gets closer, we're going to put some hard deadlines into place to make sure we are able to hit the target date for completion. Although this is a passion project, it keeps getting pushed to the side to make room for client work.

Doughnut to Donut 06: Making Time

This week our donut animation project is finally starting to get a few more sprinkles. We were able to find a couple days in-between waiting for client feedback to really focus on some of the scenes. It also helped that we had an extra set of hands in the office to help with client work so we were able to focus some of our energy on the donut video. Things are starting to shape up and we can’t wait to see this idea come to life. 


Doughnut to Donut 07: More Sprinkles

We're getting close to our deadline at LooseKeys for this animated short. Although the workload sort of picked up, we did have a project that got pushed back a few days. This allowed for some time to not only eat a few donuts but also do more work on the storyboards. Jake and Ethan were able to knock out a number of frames for the storyboards and the project is finally starting to come together. Just in time too because in about two weeks from now is National Donut Day. 

Doughnut to Donut 08: Benny & The Jets

It's now the final week until our animated short should be released. Right now it's going to be a mad dash to make sure we are able to get it released on time. Luckily we did get an extra set of hands for a couple of days.

Now that National Donut Day is behind us and we have released our animated donut video, we wanted to take a moment a look back on the project. We spent 10 weeks working and talking about this project and hopefully you enjoyed hearing about the process along the way. 

It's amazing how a passion project can push you into some different directions and make you experiment, pushing you to your limits.

We are very happy with the end result of the video and how it evolved along the way. Hopefully you enjoyed the video and were able to celebrate National Donut Day with a tasty treat of your own.
