We are very excited to present the 63rd episode from Brazilian sensation, Nicolas Vogler, featuring an hour of subtle grooves, rough synth work and an electrifying dose of that old school funk.

Nicolas Vogler’s fascination for music stretches back far into his childhood. Born and raised in Londrina, southern Brazil, his musical journey first manifested itself in an admiration for punk and rock n’ roll, which inspired him in his early years to learn guitar. As a teenager, he discovered electronic music through underground parties, nurturing a passion for techno that has only grown over the years.

Inspired by the dirty rawness of old school techno and the hypnotic vibes of more contemporary tracks, Nicolas Vogler decided to pursue his newfound passion by DJing at small events in his hometown. Today, he is a producer, gaining renown through his own personal label NCLS as well as through recent releases on groove-focused techno labels such as Syxt Berlin, Drawner records, Malör Records, ESP Collective, Hemisferio Barcelona and Secession. Played by techno DJs worldwide, Nicolas’ tracks can be found in mixes by notable artists such as Setaoc Mass, Ben Sims, Arkan, Norman Nodge, Insolate, Temudo, and many others.

Duplicity 063 | Nicolas Vogler

Over the past few years, somewhat mysteriously, @Volster has gradually become one of the most noted figures of the Croatian electronic scene, leaving his signature through production, DJing, event organisation and running a label imprint: @secessionrec.

The main subculture Marko was positively exposed to in the 90’s was techno, a style he has been practising for almost two decades now. As he was performing within and outside the Croatian borders, Volster gradually started experimenting and developing his signature textured sound leading him to sing and publish his work across his own labels and others such as Edit Select, @Vakum-Records and @northallsenrecords to name a few. 

To this day, Volster has performed all across Europe ranging from clubs to festivals like Dimensions Festival and Modem Festival which brought him to his most notable appearance and debut performance at @berghain in September 2019.

Radical Softness, a name which, at first sight, seems controversial and yet has a very much deeper meaning. Being a somewhat radical person when it comes to vouching for values such as the right of self expression, establishment of safer spaces and FLINTA visibility in the scene. On the other hand being a radical person stands and falls with the softest part of any human – the inner self. Without emotion and passion, there will never be the radicality and drive for change that is needed. Radical Softness stands for change with all their actions, activism, positivity and drive. On the musical side of the coin, Radical Softness immediately evokes a sense of warmth and force at the same time, which again represents the artistic direction of the name itself. Powerful rhythmic patterns go hand in hand with mellow synths – together on a mission to invite dancers to reach the subconscious in an almost therapeutic way. Radical Softness introduces repetition to you as the means to escape daily sorrows, to feel again and gain a few hours of freedom from a seemingly fast-paced and cold outside world. Being a music lover is probably the uniting attribute of all DJs, but where the wheat really gets separated from the chaff is the interest in going deeper than just scraping the surface. Radical Softness’ desire to be a DJ already subconsciously began in 2013 when they started working at a local bar, where they quickly became the one in charge of the music playlists. This marks the beginning of following a path down the rabbit hole into a new universe and into digging through artists' entire discographies. Their move to Berlin in 2015 further shaped their vision of music. By that time Radical Softness was already asking people in their circle to show them how to DJ, but never felt welcome enough to actually dive head first into the blue. In 2019 the switch luckily flicked, they stepped behind the decks, quickly gained recognition, especially through them well-received sets on HÖR Berlin and combined their deep music collection with the ability to quickly grasp how DJing works from the core. And yet, what we hear right now is just the beginning of what Radical Softness has to offer.

For our 80th episode, SHE/HER joins the series, an upcoming 22-year old female techno DJ based in ‘s-Hertogenbosch. 

SHE/HER started DJ'ing during the COVID-lockdown. For this reason she felt inspired by various Dutch illegal and underground rave communities. These scenes made her sound shift from hard kicks and trancey tracks to a blend of hard, funky and groovy rhythms. Although quite the shift in music taste has already been made, she believes this will never stop changing. That’s why SHE/HER will always be eager to learn and be inspired more by our beautiful techno scene.
