The Oak

Inspiration is a solo piano piece that I wrote in 10 days. This piece is based on the inspiration that I received from finding the love of my life. To draw attention to the contrast between the two periods, I employed two tones; a center-tone D for the beginning, which refers to my life before finding my now-husband, and D# for the latter portion reflecting on finding my person. Instead of using ritardando or accelerando in the score, I benefited from the changing of rhythmic patterns to give the audience the impression of ritardando or accelerando from the music. I intend to use the feeling of tempo change as a means for taking the listener through the journey of my life, all excitements that came from starting a new relationship. The work received its world premiere on November 22, 2016, at University of Toronto, Faculty of Music, Walter Hall by the virtuoso pianist, Cathy Yang.
